HDR is looking to add an experienced cultural resources professional to our Washington cultural resources team. Candidates that strive for excellence in their day-to-day work, technical practice, and careers; as well as those individuals that are interested in continuing to expand their knowledge through collaboration and continued learning will integrate well into our environmental planning practice.

The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated applied experience in cultural resources permitting, desktop reviews, field studies, and effects analysis. This person will be expected to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary project teams consisting of project managers and resource technical specialists to provide project support for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), Washington Governor's Executive Order 21-02, Revised Code of Washington, and Oregon Revised Statues, among others.

Projects will be primarily based throughout Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, with the possibility of occasionally assisting other HDR projects throughout the United States. This position includes both office tasks and fieldwork with occasional travel.


Primary responsibilities include:


In the role of Cultural Resources Specialist 2 (Archaeologist), we'll count on you to:



  • Perform complex assignments, exercising judgment in evaluation, selection and modification of standard science techniques and procedures for archaeological and historic structure projects.
  • Make decisions on significant design and scientific procedures, taking responsibility for survey data compilation, assessment, analysis within historic contexts, historic context development, and report writing.
  • Work under the direction of the Cultural Resources Business Class Lead in Washington as part of a regional team of archaeologists and architectural historians and collaborate with CRM team leaders.
  • Conduct fieldwork, including pedestrian and subsurface survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring to identify and document archaeological resources for a variety of client sectors, including transportation, renewable energy/power, and water.
  • Conduct research and develop cultural contexts and other writing deliverables.
  • Complete site inventory forms, recommendations of eligibility, and reports that meet the requirements of the appropriate State Historic Preservation Office and our local, state, and federal clients.
  • Complete projects with clear, specified objectives and understand the scope of the work being requested.
  • Work independently on small projects or assist other staff on larger projects.
  • Function as Technical Specialist, Field Director, Principal Investigator, or Project Manager on small to mid-size projects as needed, but project management is not a primary focus of position.
  • Supervise a group of professionals and technicians, as needed.
  • Assist with writing project proposals and developing project cost estimates.
  • Travel to project locations, predominantly in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, although additional nationwide travel may be requested as needed.
  • Perform other duties, as needed.



Physical Requirements



  • Must be able to record cultural resources in the field without any physical assistance (this could include hiking short distances in dense vegetation).
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures).
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in person, by telephone, and via email.
  • Must be able to effectively work in minimally supervised and/or unsupervised environments.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and able to operate a vehicle day or night.
  • Ability to travel 60% of the time.



Preferred Qualifications



  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for archeology, with preference for a M.S., M.A., or equivalent degree in archaeology (as defined in 36 CFR Part 61).
  • Qualify as an Oregon Qualified Archaeologist (as defined in Oregon Revised Statue 390.235).
  • 6 years' experience in cultural resources management.
  • Proven ability to participate, lead, and perform archaeological survey, testing and data recovery excavation, and construction monitoring for projects of various sizes.
  • Exceptional and demonstrated technical writing ability. At least one year of experience with development of technical reports such as cultural resources technical reports (i.e., survey findings reports, effects reports) compliance documentation, or similar.
  • Experience conducting cultural resources surveys and data reviews in Washington and Oregon.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Willingness to work under varied weather conditions and in various terrains.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the regulatory framework surrounding cultural resource management (i.e., Section 106, Section 4(f), and NEPA).
  • Experience collaborating with GIS and document specialists in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated, positive, flexible, team-oriented attitude with a willingness and desire to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Other technical skills and specialties (i.e., lithic analysis, faunal analysis, etc.) are a plus.
  • Previous work experience in cultural resource projects in Washington, Oregon, Idaho.
  • Qualify as Field Supervisor for federal archaeology permits in Washington, Oregon, Idaho.
  • Qualify as an Oregon Department of Transportation cultural resources consultant

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or closely related field
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in cultural resource projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of and experience with project compliance-related activities including consultation, quality assurance and reviews
  • Willingness to work under varied weather conditions
  • Successful candidates must be familiar with field study design and documentation, regulatory framework for cultural resource management, and GIS utilities
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
