POSITION SUMMARYWe're seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Database Administrator (DBA) with deep SQL Server expertise to support our mission-critical applications and help drive our ongoing modernization efforts. This role is responsible for managing, optimizing, and securing SQL Server environments that support both our legacy desktop application and evolving Azure-based solutions.

IGEN, a division of U.S. Venture, is a leading tax compliance software company trusted by industry leaders. Our tax compliance platform, powered by a data engine, gives you the complete toolkit for reducing redundancy and risk while managing tax compliance implications across the organization.

The Senior DBA will work closely with teams to support application performance, optimize SQL queries, and maintain a secure and efficient database environment across both private and public cloud platforms. Our applications are heavily dependent on SQL Server, and this role is essential to maintaining reliability and performance.

This position will be located at our Appleton, WI office. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Leverage SQL Server for logging, monitoring, and performance analysis to enhance visibility.
  • Implement features and enforce database security policies, access controls, and audit trails.
  • Administer and maintain SQL Server databases across on-premises and Azure environments.
  • Optimize database queries, indexes, and stored procedures to support application efficiency.
  • Mentor team members, helping establish and enforce best practices across DB environments.
  • Support the data layer for legacy WinForms applications, maintaining accuracy and availability.
  • Document procedures, configurations, and troubleshooting to support operational continuity.
  • Design and implement backup, recovery, and high-availability strategies for critical systems.
  • Collaborate with development teams and subject matter experts to update and configure.
  • Participate in sprints and scoping to translate requirements and implement functionality.
  • Contribute to schema design, change control processes, and release planning activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA in production environments.
  • Expertise in T-SQL, performance tuning, query optimization, and indexing strategies.
  • Experience managing SQL Server in hybrid infrastructure (on-prem and cloud) at scale.
  • Proficient with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Profiler, and Activity Monitor.
  • Familiarity with version controls, deployment planning, and schema versioning practices.
  • Knowledge of security best practices, including role-based access control and encryption.
  • Solid understanding of database backup/restoration, replication, and disaster recovery.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with high standards and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with PowerShell scripting and automation of recurring administrative tasks.

Preferred:

  • Experience supporting compliance frameworks such as SOC 2 or HIPAA.
  • Experience with Azure SQL, VM-hosted SQL Server, and cloud migration strategies.
  • Exposure to .NET-based applications (especially WinForms) and interactions with SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with Windows Server, PowerShell , Active Directory, RDS/RDP, and/or Microsoft IIS.
