POSITION SPECIFICS

The Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at the Pennsylvania State University is seeking a skilled Research Technologist to serve in the Genomics section of the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory, whose purpose is to protect animal health, human health, and ensure food safety.

Responsibilities: Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct diagnostic tests utilizing Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Technologies, including the processing of clinical samples, maintaining organized freezer stocks, and extracting high-quality nucleic acids. Prepare sequencing libraries following established protocols and operate sequencing instruments with precision.
  • Perform initial bioinformatics analyses, including quality control and data preprocessing, and accurately input results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Contribute to projects aimed at developing and optimizing new techniques in diagnostic microbial genomics. Participate in evaluating and implementing innovative methods for DNA/RNA extraction from various clinical sample types. Test and validate new approaches for sequencing library preparation, with a focus on enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and throughput.
  • Conduct required proficiency testing to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Stay informed about new techniques in microbial genomics and their applications in animal diagnostics through self-directed learning, consulting with peers in other diagnostic laboratories, and participating in professional associations such as the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians.
  • Assist with the training and onboarding of visiting scholars, students, and laboratory technicians. Provide hands-on guidance in laboratory techniques, safety protocols, and data analysis methods.
  • Other duties include overseeing the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, particularly sequencing machines, to guarantee their optimal performance, managing laboratory supplies, and maintaining an organized inventory system.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Research Technologist - Animal Sciences - Intermediate Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None If filled as Research Technologist - Animal Sciences - Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree No prior relevant work experience required; previous relevant work experience accepted in lieu of education. Required Certifications: None

Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, or a related life sciences field is preferred, with at least one year of practical experience in molecular biology, preferably in a diagnostic laboratory setting. Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing for detecting and characterizing bacterial and viral pathogens is highly preferred.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $34,800.00 - $55,500.00.
