Location: Lake Forest, Illinois (hybrid/flexible work schedule, 2-3 days/week onsite). Local Northern IL/Southeastern WI candidates only!

What You'll Do:

As a Mortgage Underwriter at CCU, you'll be the decision-maker behind the scenes-analyzing applications, assessing risk, and ensuring every loan meets regulatory, investor, and credit union standards.

Your Day-to-Day Will Include:



  • Underwriting conventional, jumbo, and home equity loans, following established agency, investor, and credit union guidelines. Meeting service level expectations for turn times and responsiveness.
  • Calculating income for salaried, hourly, and self-employed borrowers using provided tools. Evaluating complex loan files, including borrower profiles, credit reports, income docs (including self-employed returns), property valuations, and title reports.
  • Collaborating with processing and sales teams to clarify loan conditions, interpret guidelines, and keep files moving forward. Responding to internal underwriting-related inquiries via email or other channels.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert for underwriting policies, product changes, and investor requirements. Assisting in creating and delivering training materials to internal teams.
  • Addressing audit findings and post-closing issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Making informed decisions to approve, decline, or counteroffer loans within your designated authority. Flagging high-risk loans and suggesting effective mitigation strategies.
  • Staying current with evolving regulations and underwriting standards to protect CCU and our members.


What you'll need to join the team:



  • High School Diploma or GED


    • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business or Related - Preferred


  • 5+ years' experience of mortgage underwriting or related - Minimum
  • Encompass LOS experience and DE Chums Certification is a plus!
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to thoroughly review financial documents, credit reports, and property appraisals to accurately evaluate borrower risk.
  • Verbal and written professional communication skills.
  • Ability to be organized, have attention to detail, and superior judgement.
  • Knowledge in all levels of mortgage underwriting, including conventional loan guidelines, and mortgage insurance policies like UCDP & SSR.


Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $ $61,470 to $92,206 per year. This role is eligible for an annual bonus opportunity. A specific salary offer considers factors including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
