Job Description

Funded by a $752,096 annual grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the University of Missouri-Columbia's TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) Program serves 670 eligible undergraduate participants each year. Designed to support first-generation, low-income, and/or students with documented disabilities achieve academic success, MU's TRiO SSS Program offers holistic services aimed at supporting participants in making a successful transition into MU and in strategically using their time at MU to advance their academic, career, and personal goals.

Duties - as reflected in the Required and Permissible Services outlined in the TRiO Student Support Services legislation: Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended; Title IV, Part A, Subpart 2, Chapter 1, Sec. 402D; 20 U.S.C. 1070a-14:

  • Collaborate with TRiO SSS Staff, Academic Units, and other Programs on providing direct and referral services for a caseload of TRiO SSS participants addressing the following areas:
    • Academic tutoring and study skills;
    • Information on Federal student financial aid programs and benefits;
    • Resources for locating public and private scholarships;
    • Assistance in completing financial aid applications;
    • Financial and economic literacy;
    • Applying for admission to, and obtaining financial assistance for enrollment in, graduate and professional programs; and
    • Mentoring programs involving faculty or upper class students.
  • Provide individualized counseling to a caseload of TRiO SSS participants for personal, career, and academic matters, including information, activities, and instruction on the range of career options available.
  • Engage with a caseload of TRiO SSS participants on assessing personal, career, and academic needs, setting goals related to those needs, and tracking progress.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential electronic records of every student interaction, including in-person, phone, and online visits.
  • Represent TRiO SSS at events, as needed.
  • Actively engage in professional development in areas related to serving TRiO SSS participants
Shift

Flexible hours with occasional evening and weekend events

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in relevant field
Experience in advising, counseling, or teaching
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
Ability to learn various platforms to support advising functions
Background in TRiO, either as a participant or staff member
Ability to relate to and desire to work holistically with students

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $19.00 - $22.00 per hour, commensurate with education and experience
