We are seeking an experienced and technically strong Engine Calibration Engineer to lead the development, testing, and validation of engine calibration features for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) applications. The engineer will own one or more gasoline engine features - such as torque delivery, catalyst light-off, cold start behavior, or thermal management - and ensure they perform reliably and efficiently within a hybrid system. While this role focuses specifically on internal combustion engine (ICE) calibration, it requires a strong understanding of how the engine interfaces with electrified propulsion components, including battery systems, electric motors, and hybrid supervisory controls. Candidates with strong gasoline engine calibration experience are encouraged to apply; hybrid experience is a plus, not a requirement. Success in this role depends on technical depth in ICE systems and the ability to collaborate across hybrid teams to ensure smooth vehicle integration and system-level performance. Key Responsibilities:
- Own the development and validation of engine calibration features (e.g., torque control, catalyst light-off, idle control, engine start/stop behavior) that support hybrid vehicle functionality.
- Act as the feature lead for assigned calibrations, ensuring integration with hybrid supervisory controls, thermal systems, and propulsion architecture.
- Proactively drive feature development across phases - including test planning, vehicle access, data analysis, and gap resolution.
- Conduct in-vehicle and dyno-based testing in hot, cold, and high-altitude environments.
- Analyze large datasets to identify system-level issues and propose calibration or hardware solutions.
- Collaborate closely with hybrid controls, battery management, emissions, hardware, and vehicle integration teams.
- Interface with global teams to ensure calibration strategies align with international compliance and market requirements.
- Present development status, risks, and technical recommendations to engineering leadership.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or a closely related field)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in gasoline engine calibration with production delivery experience
- Demonstrated ability to independently develop and validate calibration features with minimal supervision
- Strong foundation in internal combustion engine systems, powertrain integration, and emissions control
- Experience with calibration and data analysis tools such as INCA, ATI Vision, and ETAS MDA
- Understanding of hybrid system interactions (e.g., engine start events, power blending, charge-sustaining behavior)
- Working knowledge of global emissions and OBD regulations (EPA and CARB)
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Proactive mindset and strong ownership of assigned deliverables
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- 7+ years of industry experience in engine calibration or powertrain systems development
- Experience applying Design of Experiments (DOE) and calibration optimization techniques
- Proficient in Matlab/Simulink and simulation tools (e.g., GT-Power)
- Familiarity with calibration tools such as PowerCal, CRETA, CANalyzer, or CANoe
- Experience working with international engineering teams and supporting global vehicle programs
- Knowledge of hybrid propulsion architectures (e.g., P2, P4, BSG) and their impact on engine operation
- Experience supporting the final integration and release of engine calibration datasets, including merging feature calibrations, resolving cross-feature interactions, and preparing production-ready calibrations for testing and milestone delivery
