Overview

The Public Safety Lab Technician provides support to EMS, Fire, Paramedic, and Law Enforcement instructional programs by assisting with lab preparation, equipment maintenance, and course logistics. Working closely with instructors, this position ensures that labs are safely and effectively set up for training scenarios, equipment is transported and maintained, and instructional materials are ready and available. The role also supports administrative functions such as inventory tracking, procurement, and coordination of certification testing and CPR courses. By promoting safety, enforcing college policies, and staying current with curriculum needs, the technician helps maintain a high-quality learning environment for students and faculty.

Responsibilities

Instructional Support:

    Under direction of instructor, assist with lab and scenario setup and execution to support instructional activities. Clean and properly dispose of materials used during lab sessions.
  1. Schedule and coordinate EMS, Paramedic, and Fire equipment to ensure inventory is maintained and available for instructional use.
  2. Transport equipment to training sites as needed to support instructional delivery.
  3. Serve as a lab assistant, providing instructional support to faculty as required.
  4. Participate with all EMT National Registry testing at the conclusion of each semester.
  5. In collaboration with the EMS & Fire Coordinator, assist in the scheduling of the CPR courses and preparing necessary course materials.
  6. Support the enforcement of college policies by monitoring student conduct and reporting any violations to the appropriate administrative personnel.
  7. Work alongside instructors to stay informed on current curriculum content and apply continuous quality improvement practices to enhance instructional support.
  8. Promote and maintain a safe learning environment by demonstrating and enforcing safety protocols in both classroom and lab settings.

Lab Maintenance

  1. Maintain EMS and Fire equipment to ensure functionality and readiness for instructional use. Perform routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and basic repairs.
  2. Issue equipment and supplies to instructors and monitor their return to maintain an accurate inventory.
  3. Interpret technical documentation and manufacturer documentation to troubleshoot issues, perform minor repairs, and order necessary replacement parts.
  4. Monitor and manage lab supply inventory. Process supply orders, track payments, and ensure expenditures align with the department's allocated budget.
  5. Perform general clerical and administrative tasks to support the organization, maintenance, and efficiency of instructional labs and program equipment.


Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  1. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  2. Knowledge of EMS, Paramedic, and Fire Services equipment handling.
  3. Knowledge and proficiency with programs to support laboratory learning environment.
  4. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  5. Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  6. Experience working with diverse populations.
  7. Excellent time management, multi-tasking, attention to detail and organizational skills.

Qualifications

  1. Associate degree in program area or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Two-years of work-related experience in a public safety occupation working with EMS, Paramedic and/or Fire Services equipment.
  3. Must hold a current WI EMT certification and CPR certification or obtain within 6 months of employment.

Blackhawk Technical College does not offer H-1B or other work authorization visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain work authorization throughout the employment term.
