Job Summary

Under minimal supervision apply advanced knowledge and expertise to perform preventive maintenance required to insure proper operation of all roofing systems. Make any necessary minor repairs to facility and residential roofs. Estimate time and materials for various repairs. Assist in coordination and planning of major roof replacement and repairs. Provide leadership to support personnel.

This is an Essential Reporting position. An employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery and is expected to report to Campus as soon as possible.

Job Duties

In coordination and cooperation with other trades and shops, perform various roofing duties that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
  • Properly expedites specified repair work assigned by the supervisor.
  • Inspect and maintain all facility roofs.
  • Work closely with all shop personal and other Facilities Management sections.
  • Conducts oneself in a manner that will always maintain courteous, cooperative, and professional relationships among all members of the Caltech community.
  • Represent Caltech in project meeting to assure compliance with applicable building codes and Caltech Design Guidelines.
  • Respond to trouble calls, emergency conditions and analyze routine work requests for timely execution and completion.
  • Perform day-to-day shop leadership responsibilities including scheduling shop technician work orders and attending scheduling meetings.
  • Review specification and plans for major replacement and repairs.
  • Requires the ability to work at heights and in confined spaces and must be able to lift 50-80 lbs. daily.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.
Basic Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • A minimum of eight years senior journeyman level experience working in all phases roofing installation and repair (industrial, commercial, and residential).
  • Certified to work with Castagra roofing products or able to obtain certification within the first 90 days of hire.
  • Skills to proficiently cut, fit, lay, and place roofing materials and knowledge of tile, torch down, build-up, hot and cold applied, and protective coatings.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand technical language in mechanical drawings and diagrams.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Skilled in estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish tasks.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis, bend in all directions, climb stairs and ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery and tools using hands, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions.
  • Must maintain a valid California driver's license throughout the course of employment.
  • Must be eligible and be able to adhere to the Institute's Motor Vehicle policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years of work experience in a university or facilities setting is a plus.
  • Certification for an accredited trade school.
  • Light welding skills a plus.
  • Proficiency with automated work order system and timekeeping application is a plus.

Hiring Range

$36.75 - $43.75 per hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
