About the Job

Description of Position
This position is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Clinical Service and to support excellent patient care and teaching by supporting the Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVM"s) and other medical staff. Responsible to perform, teach and train basic procedures to veterinary students.

The veterinary specialist will also be responsible for the care of instruments and equipment, maintains a clean sterile environment and manages inventory. Additional duties will include maintaining facilities according to VTH cleanliness standards and ordering or stocking feed and supplies, accurate record keeping, assisting with training of veterinary technical students and other duties as assigned. The specific duties and work schedule will vary based on current needs.

Responsibilities
* Provide excellent service to DVM's and medical team that support quality patient care.
* Facilitate open communication and teamwork among clinical care team members (DVM's students, veterinary technicians, etc.) in support of positive patient outcomes and excellent patient care.
* Answer questions and explain or demonstrate procedures and equipment for interns, senior veterinary students, and student technicians.
* Assist with teaching labs.
* Responsible to ensure that all services and supplies are charged for according to hospital fee schedule
* Provide job performance evaluations when requested.
* Utilizes down time efficiently: takes initiative to take care of departmental needs (including helping other areas of the hospital)
* Work with students, staff and clinicians in a respectful and positive manner, work to enhance communications efficiency and team cooperation
* Responsible for taking and processing radiographs and responsible for charting
* Receives appointments
* Answer phone calls from clients when necessary and ensure client call backs occur
* Patient preparation and back up scrub in and assist in surgeries
* Post-operative care of patients
* Back up cleaning and setting up surgical suite for surgeries
* Back up cleaning and wrapping packs and putting packs away after sterilization
* Maintenance and inventory
* Charging for all veterinary procedures
* Senior Vet students and tech students orientation to clinical service
* Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Clinician(s) and Director

Days/Hours - Tuesday to Friday, 7:00am to 5:30pm (4 10-hour days)

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of Animal Health Technician or equivalent program, certified as MVMA/MAVT technician, and five years of experience assisting licensed DVM's with veterinary medicine procedures to include surgeries, radiographs or emergency care; or two years of experience and specialty certification.

Selection Criteria/Preferred Qualifications: Problem solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology, knowledge of proper restraint and handling of large and small animals. Lead Technician experience, certified technician with licensure recognized in Minnesota. Supervisory experience preferred. Must possess customer service orientation and outstanding interpersonal skills.

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The
VMC sees more than 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of
additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine.

The Veterinary Medical Center is comprised of the Small Animal Hospital for dogs, cats, and other companion animals, the Piper Clinic at the new Leatherdale Equine Center, for horses, and
the Large Animal Hospital, which treats farm animals, and occasionally, zoo animals.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $28.42 to $31.34/hour depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
