This position requires to be working in office, 3 days per week, from our Bala Cynwyd, PA office. Position Summary The Senior Instructional Designer is responsible for leading the design and development of end-to-end learning curricula to support training needs across Pep Boys' field-based roles. This position plays a critical role in the company's training transformation strategy by building structured, scalable learning experiences aligned with role expectations, operational performance, and career development. This role requires deep expertise in instructional design and curriculum architecture, with an emphasis on creating practical, high-impact learning experiences for team members in customer-facing and service roles. The Senior Instructional Designer partners closely with subject matter experts, field leadership, and operational stakeholders to build comprehensive learning programs across multiple delivery methods, including eLearning, VILT, ILT, and performance support. Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the development of structured learning paths and curriculum frameworks for in-store and shop-based roles
- Design and develop content across modalities including eLearning, VILT, ILT, job aids, and toolkits
- Collaborate with SMEs, field leaders, and operational stakeholders to gather input and validate training content
- Conduct task analysis, skills gap assessments, and design role-based curriculum aligned with business needs
- Develop and maintain instructional design standards, templates, and scalable development processes
- Evaluate training effectiveness and use data to inform continuous improvement
- Provide guidance to internal partners or vendors supporting content development
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree required in Instructional Design, Education, Organizational Development, or related field; master's degree preferred
- 5 - 8 years of relevant experience
- Articulate Storyline and Rise expertise
- Familiarity with Agile, ADDIE, or blended learning development frameworks
- Proficiency in tools such as Articulate Storyline and Rise, Microsoft 365, and LMS platforms
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep understanding of instructional systems design, curriculum development, and adult learning theory
- Strong knowledge of retail, automotive, or service-based operational training environments
- Familiarity with skills/task analysis, learning pathways, and training needs assessments
- Working knowledge of training implementation best practices for in-store and front-line employees
- Ability to design role-specific learning experiences that translate into on-the-job performance
- Strong project management and content planning skills
- Ability to communicate clearly with field stakeholders, frontline employees, and leadership
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment with multiple simultaneous projects
- Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure consistency and quality across all training deliverables
Physical demands
- Role involves computer-based work and participation in meetings, both virtual and in person.
- Repetitive movement of hands and fingers, typing or writing. Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time.
