A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

AIS is seeking a part-time Veterinarian of Marine Animals to support the health and welfare of marine species housed at the Woods Hole Science Aquarium and other Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) facilities.

Primary Function:

The veterinarian will lead medical care, health monitoring, and emergency response for fish, invertebrates, sea turtles, and marine mammals. This role includes onsite and remote consultation, development of care protocols, and collaboration with aquarium staff to ensure optimal animal health standards are met across NEFSC facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:



  • Conduct routine and emergency medical assessments of animals in the aquarium's collection
  • Diagnose illnesses, prescribe and administer treatments, and oversee rehabilitation procedures
  • Provide veterinary support during procedures and medical rounds
  • Develop and refine animal health monitoring protocols, care standards, and medical recordkeeping practices
  • Support staff training in animal care, treatment administration, and early detection of health issues
  • Operate diagnostic equipment including x-ray systems and laboratory tools
  • Provide telemedicine consultation and support to other NEFSC fish-holding facilities
  • Visit other NEFSC sites annually to assess animal care practices and provide recommendations
  • Maintain veterinary certifications and comply with AVMA and state licensing requirements
  • Work occasional overtime during emergencies and travel within the region as required
  • Prepare monthly progress reports documenting medical activities, travel, and recommendations



Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates' depth of experience. This is a part-time position.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited institution
  • Active veterinary license to practice and prescribe in Massachusetts
  • Telemedicine license valid in New Jersey or other applicable states
  • Minimum 5 years of veterinary experience working with wild marine animals, including fish, invertebrates, sea turtles, and marine mammals
  • Demonstrated expertise in aquatic animal medicine, treatment protocols, and rehabilitation practices
  • Familiarity with AZA-standard medical records systems and veterinary documentation
  • Ability to develop, implement, and improve health monitoring and treatment protocols
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; experience working with interdisciplinary teams
  • Competence in providing veterinary care both in person and via teleconsultation
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a government vehicle
  • Flexibility to work variable hours and respond to animal care emergencies
  • Comfortable working in wet, cool environments with exposure to live marine animals and public settings



Travel:



  • Reimbursed at an hourly rate along with compensation for miles accrued on a personal vehicle as well as per diem at the specified Government rate.
