Pay Range

$124,200- $188,880 Annually

$124,200 - $157,464 Annually for the TSS.2 level

$148,920 - $188,880 Annually for the TSS.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.


Job Description

We have an opening for a Laser Safety Officer to provide comprehensive support for work activities involving our world class laser program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This position will be assigned to the Laser and Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Office within the Safety Engineering Functional Area and will provide technical expertise and support to multiple clients as an integral member of the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Associate Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level, based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or moredays per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

You will

  • Interpret the requirements of ANSI Z136.1 American National Standards Institute for the Safe Use of Lasers and work with scientists, engineers, technicians, and others to ensure that laser safety controls are implemented for new and existing operations in accordance with the LLNL laser safety program requirements. This may include recommending personal protective equipment to assure personnel safety.
  • Support the investigation of accidents, incidents, and reports of occupational injuries, illness, and exposures for possible causes. Prepare documentation and recommend appropriate measures to eliminate or mitigate recurrence.
  • Conduct walkthroughs, observations, audits, assessments and reviews of laser and related work activities to assess, track, and trend compliance with and the effectiveness of the laser safety program.
  • Contribute to the fulfillment of project and organizational goals, including supporting continuous improvements in the safety program and related training, while working under limited direction within the scope of assignment.
  • Interface with trained technicians for the installation, updating, repair and documentation of laser laboratory control measures.
  • Use good engineering judgment to develop approaches to solutions that may include in-depth analysis for moderately complex technical problems and long-term projects within a dynamic operational structure or facility.
  • Stay apprised of regulations and Department of Energy (DOE) requirements, review their potential impacts to LLNL, and develop, manage, and maintain laser and non-ionizing radiation safety program documents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level

  • Serve as a primary technical resource, provide advanced guidance and support for multiple aspects of projects/programs. Conduct technical analyses and audits, provide solutions to complex issues.
  • Mentor less experienced personnel.
  • Research, define, develop, and implement new ideas or approaches to implementation of safety requirements or other ES&H core program elements.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
  • Experience and comprehensive knowledge involving lasers and other nonionizing radiation; including high intensity incoherent light (UV/VIS/IR).
  • Knowledge and understanding of the ANSI Z136 series and the ability to interpret and apply practical laser safety using these standards.
  • Experience analyzing, interpreting, and assessing compliance of moderately complex regulations and recommending solutions. Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment to present and explain moderately complex technical or operational information.
  • Analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to evaluate, interpret, negotiate, recommend, and implement actions/solutions for moderately complex problems.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple moderately complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
  • Experience working independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level

  • Advanced experience and ability to lead independent work, mentor others through on-the-job training, and administrative and technical leadership skills.
  • Significant experience and advanced knowledge of relevant technologies and processes, including laser technology theory, in the design and implementation of complex systems and solutions.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical or operational information and provide advice to management, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders.
  • Experience engaging a variety of stakeholders to build relationships that enable successful mission execution and enhancing safety performance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Certification by a recognized accrediting organization, e.g., Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO), Certified Safety Professionals (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Health Physicist (CHP).
  • Experience and/or comprehensive knowledge of microwaves, radiofrequency generating devices, and/or magnetic fields.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
