UMKC is in the heart of Kansas City, a world-class computing, engineering and science hub home to companies such as Cerner, Ericsson, IBM, SS&C, Garmin, and Honeywell. The School of Science and Engineering supports many programs in the STEM fields such as computer science, engineering, biology, mathematics and statistics, etc. including the most recent added program of Architecture.

The UMKC Math Academy's mission is to support students in grades 7-12 to raise their math proficiency so that they can pursue STEM careers after leaving high school.

Job Description

The UMKC Math Academy is searching for three highly qualified full-time math instructors (2025-26 school year) to be a part of movement to increase math proficiency across the Kansas City area. This is a full-time, benefit eligible, non-ranked instructor position in the UMKC Math Academy which is part of the UMKC School of Science and Engineering.

The UMKC Math Academy's mission is to work with local area school districts supporting underserved communities to raise student math competency so students can be successful in pursuing STEM oriented careers. The teacher role in the UMKC Math Academy is truly unique as teachers are allowed to teach the classes and content without the constraints of district responsibilities. No more Advisory/Homeroom classes, major behavior issues, supervision, state testing, hall duty, lunch duty, committee meetings, principal evaluations or district professional development.

Math Academy teachers focus on students and their knowledge of the content. The Academy's goal is to foster excitement in the STEM areas by increasing math proficiency. Teachers play a key role in helping to accomplish this by:

  • Being embedded in area school districts supporting dual credit math classes usually not available in these schools
  • Teach a combination of 6 classes consisting of Dual Credit math and/or HS math courses. Teaching is on location at area high schools during the fall and spring semesters. Teachers may be required to travel to different sites and buildings during the day.
  • Identifying math strengths and weaknesses of students in the class and adjusting content and pacing to fill knowledge/skill gaps so students can learn dual credit math content.
  • Classes to be taught are primarily precalculus and college algebra. Other classes include Calculus I, Calculus II and Elementary Statistics.
  • Collaborating with other teachers in the Math Academy to best meet the needs of our diverse students
  • Understanding key departmental objectives and using this understanding to accomplish/complete educational support projects/initiatives
  • Impacting the quality of own work and the work of others on the Academy team, ensuring efficiency productivity, compliance, etc.
  • Serving as a UMKC Math Academy liaison with building administration, faculty, staff, trainers, and/or other internal and external constituents.
  • Working with people in the industry to help provide students with opportunities to learn about careers outside the classroom.

Knowledge/Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of middle and high school math curriculums
  • Understanding and connection of state math standards
  • Practical experience utilizing a variety of teaching pedagogies.
  • All knowledge/skills of middle and high school teaching such as: lesson planning, classroom management, student evaluation, etc.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree - Mathematics Education
  • Must have Missouri Teaching Certificate
  • Over 10 years' experience teaching a variety of HS math classes.
  • To teach dual credit classes the candidate must have either
    • Mathematics graduate course work with a minimum of 18 mathematics graduate hours (or near completion)
      OR
    • Master of Mathematics or Master Mathematics Education degree or a Master's degree in any area such as ED Specialist.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of middle and high school math curriculums
  • Experienced working with school district central office personnel to improve math instruction, curriculum, and training across the district.
  • Effective project and time management skills
  • Self-starter, risk taker, able to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience in schools with high student populations of underserved communities
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
