Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Lab Researcher II - Histopathology Core Facility for the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute ( EOHSI). An experienced Histotechnologist is required to perform operational activities at the Rutgers EMSOP/ EOHSI Research Pathology Services laboratory. Operational activities include customer support/training, hazardous waste management, SOP creation/administration, ordering, archiving, data management including chain-of-evidence administration as well as frozen and epoxy-perfused sectioning and high throughput slide scanning.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Performs all work within the lab and evaluate the quality of work performance with regard to conformance, to quality standards, policies and procedures as well as evaluating the workload volume and scheduling to determine and ensure the most effective, efficient and productive use of laboratory associates and facilities.
  • Interfaces with pathologists, academic researchers, medical examiners staff and other collaborators in Rutgers departments, units/schools, across the university community, as well as with the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry groups to assist in the generation and preparation of preliminary data for grant proposals and manuscripts to secure extramural funding from traditional and non-traditional funding sources.
  • Necropsy and trimming tissues, tissue preparation/processing, embedding and micro sectioning of paraffin and frozen tissues and routine staining with cover slipping.
  • Performs manual special stains, immunofluorescent / immunohistochemical staining and quality assurance.
  • Trims, processes, embeddes, cut thick sectioning and staining of tissues in plastic medium.
  • Provides technical support, training and supervision of faculty, research associates, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, staff scientists, and others seeking to utilize histopathology techniques.
  • Orders maintenance of laboratory equipment, data and hazardous material management.
  • Scans digital images, archiving, and image analysis to quantify tissue objects, cells, or other areas of using an AxioScan A7 and Image J and Image Pro Premier software.
  • Designs qualification, instrument installations and operation qualifications test plans (QTP/IQ/OQ) on laboratory equipment for production on animal and human tissue samples.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in a related scientific field or discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of research principles and practices.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant professional research experience in a laboratory research function, excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Immunohistochemistry and/or clinical pathology certification.
  • Experience in diagnostic and veterinary histology.
  • Grasp of the history, issues, science and processes of histology.
  • Experience with collaborative scientific teams and collaborative research.
  • Leadership experience with significant responsibility for histology in the context of research & development programs.
  • Network of colleagues, collaborators, and contacts in histology, and basic research fields.
  • Excellent written and oral skills and experience in preparing SOPs, training ocuments and reports.
  • Knowledge and experience of histochemistry, microscopy, processing techniques, preparation of specimens, medical terminology, chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and use of scientific method at a level normally acquired through a BS in biological sciences and ten years of experience supporting basic toxicology and pharmacology research.
  • Supervisory experience is needed to manage others.
  • Visual acuity and the ability to distinguish fine gradation of colors, including differentiating of red and green, manual dexterity in both hands, with above average eye and hand coordination and the ability to grasp and manipulate small instruments and delicate equipment required in the efficient generation of quality histology slides.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten or more years' experience in a basic research and pharmaceutical histology laboratory with successful completion of college graduate level course work including, biology and/or anatomy, mathematics, and an understanding of metric system are requisite.
  • Experience in histology is key to timely, high quality microscopic slide generation and QA/QC.
  • Specialized training including the execution of animal study studies and laboratory records maintenance is integral to successful collaborations with faculty and external collaborators.

Equipment Utilized

  • Research caliber light and immunofluorescence microscopes.
  • Stereology and morphometry software
  • Paraffin and plastic embedding stations, paraffin and plastic microtomes, ultramicrotomes for ultra-thin sections, cryomicrotomes for frozen sections, automatic staining center, and specialty histochemistry instruments, morphometrics software, and high throughput slide scanner.
