Position Summary |
The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the management and processing of biological samples from patients entering one of the
UNC Kidney Center's study cohorts. The individual will work in a collaborative network composed of physicians, PhDs, nurses, research personnel, and patients. 'Hands on' processing of biological samples (including blood and urine) is required. Sample processing includes but is not limited to cell isolation, preparation and extraction of samples for gel electrophoresis,
ELISA, Western blotting, and other miscellaneous cellular, molecular and biochemical methods. The position will provide assistance in inventorying and maintaining all equipment needed for preparing, organizing, and storing reagents for sample processing. All requirements for laboratory safety in handling blood borne pathogens must be kept current. |

The candidate must be proficient at multi-tasking and have the ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. The successful candidate must have attention to detail and be willing to learn new techniques. This position requires flexibility in work hours to accommodate processing of patient samples that may arrive after 5 pm particularly on Tuesday clinic days.
Must be able to use considerable judgement and skills in performing work assignments. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work and communicate with diverse populations effectively and professionally. Ability to work independently as well as function as part of a team. Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience in hands-on research experience in immunological techniques including
SDS
PAGE Western Blotting, cell culture, functional immune assays, immunoprecipitation, flow cytometry, and ELISA's are strongly preferred. Prior laboratory experience working with cell culture and with human PBMCs is highly desirable. |

Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
Ability to travel from the laboratory in Burnett-Womack to the outreach area of McLendon Labs in the
UNC hospital several times a day to transport samples received from Eastowne for processing and storage. |
