Department Summary

The Department of Dance and Theatre is housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, with approximately 400 theatre majors and minors in theatre and dance. The Department offers a BA degree in Theatre with concentrations in Performance, Design/Technology, General Studies and Theatre Teacher Certification, and a Minor in Dance. The vibrant undergraduate program delivers a rigorous dance and theatre education within a liberal arts context. The Department produces a full season 6-8 productions as well as several laboratory events directed by faculty, guest artists, or students.

Position Overview

The Performing Arts Technician is responsible for technical work involving the coordination of all aspects of scenery construction in the Department of Dance and Theatre Arts. This position assists with supervision of student labs and workers, enforcement of safety guidelines, maintenance of shop equipment, inventory and purchasing of shop equipment, and installation, strike, and disposal/storage of departmental productions.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field and two years of professional related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Skill in managing one's own time and the time of others.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines.
  • Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and repair of applicable equipment and tools.
  • Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.


Preferred Qualifications



  • BA in Theater and two years of practical professional experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrate experience in scenic construction, wood working, metals, welding, rigging and CNC technology.
  • Must have the ability to interpret working drawings, build, install, and strike scenery.
  • Demonstrate computer skills with: Excel, Word, and drafting in 2D/3D (Vectorworks preferred).
  • The candidate must be able to move/lift heavy materials and scenery.
  • Must be able to work at heights on ladders, genie lifts, catwalks, and theatre grid.
  • Ability to work some nights, weekends, and holidays.


Required License/Registration/Certifications

Must hold a valid Texas driver's license.

Job Duties:



  • Scenery construction for departmental productions.
  • Student supervision.
  • Security safety supervision.
  • Maintenance of shop equipment.
  • Department vehicle custodian.
  • Purchasing, materials procurement, and office duties.
  • Hourly student supervisor and time keeper.


Physical Requirements:



  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Lifting and moving objects up to 100 pounds or more.
  • Moving self in various positions to perform tasks in tight and confined spaces.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
  • Lifting and Moving objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools.


Environmental Hazards:



  • No adverse environmental conditions expected.
  • Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts or vibration.
  • Noisy environments.


Work Schedule:

40 hours per week flexed to accommodate shows and productions. Some nights and weekends required.
