Mead & Hunt, an award-winning national architecture and engineering firm, has continued to exceed our strategic growth initiatives creating opportunity for our current and prospective team members. As a result, a full-time position is available for a Transportation Community Planner. This opportunity is available at our Herndon, VA office location with a minimum three days a week working on-site in Loudoun County.

Responsibilities for this position may include the following:

  • Conduct development reviews including traffic impact studies, developer proffers, site plans and other related documents.
  • Participating with a multidisciplinary team in complex planning studies related to transportation, equity, environmental justice, land use, sustainability, resiliency, economic development, and urban design.
  • Participating in research, data collection (in field and online), GIS analyses, demographic and socioeconomic analyses, and writing.
  • Drafting reports and documents such as community master plans, comprehensive plans, corridor studies, transportation plans, ADA transition plans, safety action plans, technical reports, zoning ordinances, PEL studies/NEPA documents, and grant application narratives.
  • Drafting project related maps, presentations, displays, and meeting summaries.
  • Assisting with streetscape and urban design concept development, renderings, and cost estimating
  • Participating in stakeholder engagement meetings to share information with the public and to collect and public document feedback.

Occasional travel for project related activities, business development, and training will be required. A valid driver's license will be required.

The successful candidate will have all the following:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Planning or a related field
  • A minimum of six (6) years of relevant work experience
  • AICP membership strongly recommended

The ideal candidate will have any or all of the following:

  • A Master's degree in Planning or related field
  • Experience engaging and establishing partnerships with diverse project stakeholders including elected officials, community groups, advocacy organizations, public agencies, and the general public.
  • Experience preparing reports and technical documents such as Action Plans, Multimodal Transportation Plans, Small Area Plans/Sector Plans, Corridor Plans, PEL Studies, NEPA documents, ADA Transition Plans, Grant Applications and Grant Reporting, Zoning Ordinances, and/or Comprehensive Plans.
  • Experience presenting technical information to live audiences and preparing PowerPoints, Displays, Maps, and/or StoryMap websites.
  • Understanding of State requirements for Comprehensive Plans in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia
  • Understanding of housing policies and affordable housing best practices
  • Understanding of environmental justice and emerging trends to address equity in urban planning and transportation planning
  • Understanding of federal, regional, state, and local government roles in transportation planning, funding, oversight, and capital development.
  • Experience working in communities that are socially, economically, linguistically, and/or ethnically diverse.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team
