Job Summary

Senior Hazardous Materials Technician supports both campus research and health operations at UCSF and are responsible for managing hazardous, medical, radioactive, and controlled substance waste, receiving radioactive materials and controlled substances used in research and health care, testing emergency showers and eyewashes, certifying chemical fume hoods, performing radiation surveys, calibrating radiation survey meters, and preparing and decontaminating patient rooms used for radiation therapies.

  • The position is part of Hazardous Materials Management (HMM) group within EH&S and reports to the HMM Operations Supervisor.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $33.80 - $40.70 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) is responsible for promoting environmental stewardship and a safe workplace at UCSF while helping to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to occupational safety and the environment

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma (GED)
  • At least 2 years of experience in an environmental health and safety program or related work experience managing hazardous, medical, or radioactive waste; or two years of college including appropriate science courses and one year of experience in an environmental health and safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Knowledge of how to safely work with hazardous materials
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to use Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and the ability to wear appropriate personal protective clothing, including a full-face respirator is required
  • This is a 'critical' position; fingerprinting and a background check are required
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's license with a good driving record is required.
  • Incumbent is subject to DMV pull notice program.
  • Ability to work a swing shift
  • Ability to work during weekends and campus holidays as necessary to ensure coverage of EH&S activities
