PLANT CHEMIST / SENIOR PLANT CHEMIST

1st Shift

The Senior Plant Chemist is responsible for the oversite of tinting, quality control, and manufacturing assistance of Greenville related products. Additional duties may include development work on new and existing formulas in conjunction with R&D initiatives via collaboration with the Defense/Aerospace and General Industrial Technical Directors.

The successful candidates will have an acceptable score on the color matching and math tests.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Oversee the tinting group and QC team to ensure timely and efficient turnaround of color matches and production batches.
  • Function as a liaison between production, R&D, and QC.
  • Provide technical assistance for production, R&D, and existing accounts.
  • Assign individual tasks and responsibilities to specific team members and build a cohesive team environment.
  • Counsel individual group members as needed on specific technical matters.
  • Make independent decisions regarding batch quality.
  • Consult with Aerospace and General Industrial Technical Directors on new materials or issues of major concern.
  • Direct manufacturing in correcting problem batches, tinting procedures, etc.
  • Physically adjust out of specification constants with chemical additions to material based on test results or technical guidance.
  • Develop products and solve technical issues with a relatively minor amount of direction.
  • Keep accurate records and maintain a neat working area.
  • Build knowledge of analytical methods for solving problems.
  • Work with and help train production personnel to solve problems.
  • Reduce or rework distressed products on hand to reduce inventory.
  • Monitors the quality of products produced to ensure adherence to company standards.
  • Responsible for adherence to safety rules by all direct reports, promoting safe work practices, coaching and any necessary safety training required in addition to that provided by the corporate safety trainer. Also is responsible for stopping and reporting any safety violations when observed throughout the facility.
  • Comply with all quality, safety, and work rules and regulations.
  • Interview, hire and terminate employees, as necessary.
  • Conduct performance reviews on a semi-annual basis.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor or manager.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preferred education level: BS or MS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Polymer Science.
  • Preferred experience level: one to three plus years direct experience in an industrial manufacturing environment developing, formulating, and testing new and existing coatings technologies.
  • Demonstrated record of successful product development and technical maintenance of existing products.
  • Robust design of experiment skills and demonstrated ability to evaluate results and make product adjustments necessary to meet project objectives.
  • Must be a high energy, results driven individual with excellent communication, computer, and decision-making skills.
  • The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with proactive problem-solving skills and strong work ethic is necessary for timely completion of assigned projects.
  • Understands, supports, and conforms to company policies and processes. Integrates policies and processes into projects.
  • Superb oral and written communication skills with the ability to work well and collaboratively with peers, leadership, and cross functional teams.

  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, Outlook), ERP system and other office machinery.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk and/or hear, stand, and/or walk, use hands to finger, handle or touch objects or controls, and move from place to place. The employee is regularly required to sit, balance, stoop, and occasionally reach above shoulders. The employee occasionally must use foot/feet to operate machinery, climb, or balance and reach above the shoulders. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 65 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Personal Protection Equipment is required during various processes in the production area. Safety shoes, glasses, and flame-retardant uniforms are required in the production area. Respirators and ear plugs may be required when performing certain production activities.
