HJF is seeking a Senior Software Developer to envision product development and manage projects through completion. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and maintaining custom bioinformatics tools and software, as well as designing, implementing, and maintaining databases for storing and managing genomic and epidemiological data at the Viral Genomics & Bioinformatics Department, within the Viral Diseases Program (VDP) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).

This position will automate data analysis workflows, integrate bioinformatics tools and databases, ensure data quality, integrity, and security, develop and implement data management policies and procedures, and provide technical support to team members. This position reports to the Lead, Viral Genomics and Bioinformatics.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain custom bioinformatics tools and software for analyzing genomic and epidemiological data.
  • Automate data analysis workflows to improve efficiency and reproducibility.
  • Integrate bioinformatics tools and databases into a cohesive software environment.
  • Design, implement, and maintain relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) for storing and managing genomic and epidemiological data.
  • Manage NGS (Illumina and Nanopore) data transfer from sequencing instruments to High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources.
  • Manage the internal custom project management website, code and backend.
  • Interface with WRAIR IT on HPC software and database-related issues.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and security by implementing appropriate data validation and access control mechanisms.
  • Develop and implement data management policies and procedures, including data backup and recovery plans.
  • Provide data access and support to team members, including creating data queries and reports.
  • Collaborate with bioinformaticians to design and implement new software features and database schemas.
  • Stay current with the latest advances in software development, database management, and data security technologies.
  • Provide technical support to team members, including troubleshooting software issues and providing training.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages (Python, Java, C++, etc.).
  • Experience with software development methodologies).
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics tools and databases.
  • Experience with database management systems (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Knowledge of data modeling and database design.
  • Experience with managing high-performance computing (HPC) data storage, environments and resources.
  • Strong data management skills.
  • Familiarity with data security principles.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience working with genomic or epidemiological data.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud).
  • Experience with containerization and package management systems (e.g., Docker, Conda).
  • Experience with cloud-based database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL).
  • Experience with data warehousing.
  • Experience in a government or military research environment.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$100,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
