Principal Purpose of Position:

The Industrial Fire Chiefoversees all aspects of fire safety and emergency response within a specific industrial facility, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and providing leadership to the fire department.They are responsible for managing the volunteer Emergency Response Team (ERT) personnel, developing and implementing policies, and overseeing all fire-related activities, including training, prevention, and suppression.The position is responsible for maintaining the fleet of mobile fire protection and emergency response equipment while ensuring all emergency response personnel are properly trained in its use.

Key Responsibilities of an Industrial Fire Chief:

Leadership and Management

  • Overseeing the fire department, including the thirty person ERT and equipment.
  • Maintain all fire protection equipment in good working order to meet the needs of any site emergency.
  • Conduct emergency response drills to ensure readiness and compliance with the business continuity plan.
  • Overseeing and managing the fire department's budget, including capital and operating expenses.

Emergency Response and Fire Prevention

  • Leading and coordinating responses to fire and other emergencies, ensuring the safety of personnel and the public.
  • Developing and implementing fire safety programs, conducting inspections, and addressing safety hazards.

Training and Development

  • Ensuring personnel are trained in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services, and staying abreast of industry standards.
  • Creating and implementing policies, procedures, and training programs to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Coordinate all required training for the Reading Emergency Response Team to maintain competency in the event of an emergency.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Working with other departments, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure effective emergency response and fire safety.

Documentation and Recordkeeping

  • Maintaining accurate records of incidents, training, and inspections.
  • Maintain oversite of all fire protection system impairments, globally, through the FM Global Red Tag System.

Incident Investigation

  • Conduct fire investigations to determine cause and origin.
  • Conduct after action reviews following emergency response to identify areas of improvement for the ERT.

Community Engagement

  • Serving as a representative of the fire department to various stakeholders and the public.
  • Participate in the Local Emergency Planning and Response Committee (LEPRC) as needed.

EHS Team Support

  • Provide shared contractor orientation support at the Reading site.
  • Support fire protection surveys and audits across the organization to reduce risk.
  • Assist in individual projects as deemed necessary by department management.

Education and/or Training:

  • High School Diploma required, bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Safety, or related field (preferred)

Relevant Work Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in industrial or municipal firefighting, with 5+ years in a leadership or command role.
  • Experience in high-risk industrial environments such as oil & gas, petrochemical, or heavy manufacturing strongly preferred.

Planning/Organizing/Managerial Knowledge:
(Ranges from task-focused to integrating related functions, to broadly strategic integration)

  • Deep knowledge of fire protection systems, industrial hazards, and emergency response protocols.
  • Ability to work in high-stress situations and make critical decisions quickly.

Communicating & Influencing Skills:
(Does the job require communication, reasoning with others, or changing behaviors?)

  • Strong leadership, communication, and team management skills.
  • Proficiency in fire reporting software, MS Office, and emergency management tools
  • Ability to travel between company sites, as required.
  • Occasional on-call availability during off-hours for emergency response.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
