Director, Lab IT and Operations

Description & Requirements
The Broad Institute is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Director of Laboratory Technology and Operations to lead the development, planning, and execution of Lab IT services and operations, ensuring that research scientists are equipped with the technology and infrastructure necessary to advance scientific discovery. This role is critical in building out and managing a high-functioning team capable of supporting Broad's lab spaces with innovative and scalable solutions.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Chief Data Officer, the Director will be responsible for aligning laboratory technology and operations with the broader strategic vision of the Office of Scientific Enablement, within Enterprise IT. They will work closely with scientific leadership, lab managers, and technology teams across the Institute to scale lab services, implement best practices, and ensure that laboratory technology supports cutting-edge research efforts.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership for Lab IT and Operations:
  • Lead the development and execution of a strategic vision for Laboratory Technology and Operations that aligns with Broad's scientific mission and fosters innovation.
  • Define and prioritize key initiatives to support lab operations at scale while promoting best practices and ensuring that services are flexible and adaptable to meet the evolving needs of the scientific community.
Team Development & Management:
  • Build, lead, and manage a high-functioning, cross-disciplinary team, including full-time employees (FTEs) and managed service providers (MSPs), ensuring that they are equipped to support the technology needs of research scientists across all lab spaces.
  • Empower team members to deliver optimal solutions, provide excellent customer service, and foster a collaborative work environment.
Lab Technology & Infrastructure Support:
  • Oversee the implementation, maintenance, and operational management of IT infrastructure and services within laboratory environments.
  • Ensure seamless acquisition, transfer, and storage of research data while optimizing lab space technology to support scientific workflows and enhance research productivity.
Data Management & Workflow Optimization:
  • Develop and implement standardized, repeatable data workflows for labs to ensure robust scientific data management.
  • Work closely with scientists and lab managers to ensure that laboratory instruments and technologies generate and manage data in a manner that supports reproducibility, scalability, and efficiency.
Collaboration with Enterprise IT Teams:
  • Serve as a key liaison between the lab spaces and other Enterprise IT groups, including Service Desk, Systems Administration, Networking, and others.
  • Ensure seamless collaboration and alignment across teams to ensure that research labs receive the IT services and support they require. Identify opportunities for integration and optimization of lab technologies with broader Enterprise IT services.
Vendor & Partner Management:
  • Act as the primary point of contact for instrument vendors, technology providers, and service partners.
  • Lead efforts to onboard new instruments, coordinate equipment repairs, and manage relationships with third-party vendors to ensure high-quality support and technology solutions are provided to Broad's research labs.
Incident Management & Support:
  • Act as the point of escalation for Lab IT incidents, ensuring timely and effective resolution of issues that may disrupt research workflows.
  • Establish clear incident management protocols, ensuring consistent and efficient response times to technical challenges that arise within lab spaces.
Continuous Improvement & Scaling:
  • Continuously assess and improve the performance, efficiency, and scalability of lab technology operations, ensuring that solutions can grow in line with the Institute's research needs.
  • Identify opportunities to scale processes, improve technology infrastructure, and implement best practices to support scientific excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS
Leadership & Team Management:
  • Proven experience in managing teams and providing effective leadership in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to recruit, develop, and mentor a team of diverse professionals, ensuring they are equipped to support lab operations and technology needs.
Strong Technical Expertise:
  • In-depth understanding of modern computing technology, lab IT systems, instrumentation, and data management within a research environment.
  • Proficiency in both Windows and Linux operating systems, basic network troubleshooting (e.g., ping, traceroute, ipconfig), and cloud technologies (e.g., distributed computing, cloud storage).
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Partnerships:
  • Ability to work effectively across different teams and functions, including scientific leadership, research staff, and enterprise IT teams.
  • Skilled in building relationships, aligning diverse stakeholder interests, and ensuring cohesive collaboration to meet the needs of the scientific community.
Technical Documentation & Process Development:
  • Strong experience in writing and maintaining technical documentation for both scientific and technical audiences.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing robust procedures and processes that scale across lab environments and integrate seamlessly into broader IT operations.
Data & Workflow Management:
  • Demonstrated ability to define, implement, and maintain effective data management strategies and workflows within laboratory settings.
  • Experience in supporting large-scale scientific data systems, ensuring compliance, reproducibility, and high standards of data quality.
Vendor & Service Provider Management:
Experience working with vendors and service providers, ensuring that lab equipment and technology solutions are delivered, maintained, and supported in accordance with research objectives and timelines.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 8+ years of experience in IT management, laboratory technology operations, or related fields within research environments, including at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of implementing IT solutions in research or laboratory environments, scaling operations, and managing complex technological infrastructure.
  • Experience with lab-specific technologies, instrumentation, and scientific software systems.
