Although the focus of this position is the Duke Energy's Carolinas region, this position may be physically seated in any region in the Enterprise.

Position Summary:

The primary focus of the position is to lead the evaluation of operations on the Duke Energy Carolinas (DEC) with a secondary oversight into the Duke Energy Progress (DEP) Transmission system.The position will analyze data to determine the location and correlation of faults to support real time operations and outage restoration utilizing various software tools and analysis methods. Additionally, this position will review and analyze the protection and control relay scheme performance for all operations to validate correct performance of the scheme. Deficiencies identified through analysis will require follow-up for resolution with the appropriate Asset Management, Engineering, and Relay Maintenance organizations.

The responsibilities also include knowing, applying and supporting compliance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards for System Monitoring devices such as Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs), relay misoperations and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related issues. This position will support the organization by identifying and prioritizing work for the installation or replacement of related equipment including various Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and Protection & Control (P&C) equipment. The incumbent will also assist with technical support to the Construction & Maintenance organization regarding relays, DFRs and associated communication devices.

Key Skills/Experience

Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Participate in rotational on-call duty for fault location and system event analysis support.

  • Analyze, investigate, and report relay misoperations and monitor the accuracy of information in the outage management systems (TOMS and iTOA).

  • Provide troubleshooting direction for DFRs and P&C relay systems.

  • Coordinate with P&C Engineering on design issues discovered during investigations.

  • Issue Corrective work orders for equipment and communication repairs.

  • Maintain and update the tools and software needed to perform fault location analysis.

  • Perform evaluations of new technology and products that are applicable for fault location activities.

  • Identify locations for DFR & RTU installations and replacements per NERC requirements and other reliability needs.

  • Identify locations for remote fault detectors and sectionalizing switches to improve system reliability.

  • Determine the settings and specifications for DFRs and remote fault detectors.

  • Identify and prioritize DFR, RTU and P&C equipment installations and replacements.

  • Support compliance with all applicable NERC Standards, primarily PRC-002, PRC-004, PRC-016 and all CIP requirements.

Required/Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program and/or a PE.

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

  • Eight (8) plus years or more related work experience

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of Protection and Control design, relay settings and philosophy.

  • Knowledge of Transmission system operating protocols

  • Familiarity with NERC PRC-002, PRC-004, and PRC-016 reliability standards

  • Knowledge of digital fault recorders (DFRs) and sequence of event recorders including troubleshooting connectivity and communications issues.

  • Knowledge of outage reporting tools including iTOA and TOMS, GIS tools, ASPEN, FALLS, and protection and control equipment vendor software tools.

  • Ability to collaborate with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skilled in engineering theories and principles

  • Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Skilled principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid-Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements:

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE

  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience

  • Nuclear may require either Professional Engineer registration, a Masters Degree in a technical discipline, SRO certification, an RO or SRO license, or Technical Nuclear certification.

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
