THE POSITION

Washington County's Land Use & Transportation Department is now hiring a limited-duration Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician III.

The Position
In addition to making beautiful paper and online maps, the Geographic Information Systems Technician III provides support to end users of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the department. This includes analyzing a variety of statistics and spatial data to create diagrams, illustrations, and maps; responding to mapping and information requests from employees and the public; maintaining complex GIS datasets; and writing programs and scripts for the development of mapping products. The GIS Technician III will work closely with land use and transportation planners on long-range planning projects. This position will also:
  • Design and prepare a variety of maps, web applications, illustrations, and other graphic representations to display and analyze spatial data.
  • Perform spatial analysis and database queries; use and maintain geodatabases, data layers, and spatial data structures using ESRI GIS tools and programs
  • Develop systems and processes to collect, clean, maintain, and document datasets in support of long-range planning efforts.
  • Coordinate and work with other GIS staff and information systems management to advance development and implementation of GIS applications and processes.
  • Communicate with other staff and member of the public in order to convey technical information and to train others to use GIS tools and resources.
The ideal candidate will have experience creating paper maps, digital maps, and online mapping tools, and can maintain data sets and documentation.

This is a limited-duration position with a projected end date of December 31st, 2026.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Associate's Degree in engineering technology, drafting technology, geographic information systems, computer technology, or a related field AND Five (5) years of experience in the use and operation of GIS systems and applications. OR
  • Seven (7) years of experience in the use and operation of GIS systems and applications.

Selection Process

Your total score for this examination will affect your placement on the eligible list (a list of candidates eligible for interviews).
  4. Panel Interview(s): Our goal is to schedule panel interviews with candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and pass the SME Review as soon as possible.
  5. Reference Checks: The hiring manager will conduct reference checks on the top candidate.
  6. Salary Analysis & Conditional Offer: Human Resources will conduct a salary analysis for the successful candidate and extend an offer of appointment.
  7. Start Date: A start date will be determined after all conditions of employment have been met.
