Job Description

Washington Gas is seeking a Director of Supply Chain to provide leadership, guidance and mentorship across the Supply Chain Management (SCM) team. The Director of Supply Chain will lead and manage a team of direct reports that includes Category Managers and Sourcing Specialists, managing assigned spend categories along with related business unit partners and suppliers, and other internal relationships (e.g., Legal, AP, Risk, Audit, etc.). You will develop and execute annual Category Management plans that apply appropriate sourcing and supplier relationship strategies, and ensure the organization meets financial and budget targets and has the necessary goods and services needed to run the business effectively and efficiently, delivering value for our customers and other stakeholders.

While you will primarily support the US Utilities segment of our business, currently comprised of Washington Gas Light Company (WGL) and SEMCO, it is part of our broader, shared services SCM team within the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) organization. This position is based out of the WGL Springfield Operations Center in Northern Virginia. It is a hybrid role, currently requiring at least 3 days a week in the office.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with SCM leadership and assigned business units to develop and maintain annual Category Plans, including spend and supply market analysis, should-cost modeling, opportunity and risk assessments, initiative prioritization, sourcing strategy identification, creation of the associated sourcing calendar, and target setting (e.g. value creation, hard and soft dollar benefits, etc.).
  • Execute the plans and other ad hoc requests to achieve the targets through the identified strategies (e.g., RFx / competitive bid processes, direct supplier negotiations, demand management, etc.).
  • Lead the negotiating and contracting process, remain compliant with policies and procedures, appropriately mitigate risks, calculate financial and other business impacts.
  • Summarize and route initiative outcomes and contract documents for approval
  • Provide effective stakeholder management and management of key supplier relationships
  • Coordinate with internal partners to align on business and contractual requirements, provide guidance to the team on drafting contract amendments, change orders, SOWs and management of key supplier relationships.
  • Monitor and evaluate category performance, leveraging key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement and implement continuous improvement or corrective measures as appropriate.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship across the SCM team, including directing the work of any Category Managers and Strategic Sourcing and Contract Specialists assigned.
  • Contribute innovative ideas and solutions to improve SCM operations, processes, policies, guidelines, templates, methodologies, performance and impact over time.
  • Attend relevant meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and review relevant professional materials to remain current on the principles, practices and new developments within the procurement, strategic sourcing and supply chain management career field, and bring these concepts and ideas back to the team.

Your Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Business, Finance, Economics or Supply Chain Management focus preferred).
  • 10+ years of relevant experience (gas and/or electric utility experience preferred), and 5+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience managing high performance teams.
  • Deep understanding of Category / Commodity Management and Strategic Sourcing frameworks and strategies.
  • Strong understanding of common contract terms and conditions and demonstrated experience leading complex and strategic contract negotiations.
  • Ability to think analytically and strategically, listen, be curious and ask good questions.
  • Ability to perform and teach others pricing and financial analysis
  • Takes initiative, able to prioritize, manage their time, and support multiple projects
  • Process oriented, but able to be flexible and respond appropriately to the situation and changing circumstances or priorities
  • Able to deal with ambiguity
  • Ability to collaborate, develop and maintain good working relationships with teammates, business partners and supplier contacts
  • Willingness to flex and support teammates and emergent needs when required
  • A Creative Problem Solver.

We offer a competitive salary range of $176,000 to $262,500 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
