The National Grid Transmission Control Center is responsible for the safe operation, monitoring, and control of all our transmission assets ( 115 kV) across Upstate New York through a 24x7 facility. Our department interacts extensively with field operations, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), various engineering groups, and other utilities in the state to ensure reliability to our customers and our system. Job Purpose
The Senior System Operator's primary purpose is to support the operation of the New York transmission system in a safe, secure, reliable, and efficient manner in accordance with all FERC, NERC, NPCC, NYISO, and National Grid requirements, standards, and procedures. As a shift position, all employees must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts to enable 24x7 coverage. As part of the interview process, candidates must pass an aptitude test. For 6 months employees will go through an in-depth training curriculum to receive necessary qualifications and gain various skills required for this role. Part of this training program may consist of: * Obtaining a NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification * Obtaining Clearance and Control authorization * Spending time with National Grid Field Operations * On-the-job training Key Accountabilities
* Provide technical support to the Transmission Control Center to enable the safe, secure, reliable, and efficient operation of National Grid's New York transmission system. * Assist in the resolution of system failures and equipment problems to ensure reliable system performance. * Coordinate generator dispatch with generators and NYISO. * Perform system and operating studies as required for planned work and for real time operations to support peak load and other unique system configurations. This involves thermal and voltage analysis using a state-of-the-art power flow analysis software. * Maintain close and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as the EMS staff, NYISO, field work force, engineering departments, distribution control centers, neighboring utilities, generators, and transmission customers. * Ensure compliance with all National Grid procedures and regulatory standards through knowledge gained and by using internal controls. * Help National Grid usher in a leading-edge energy market by developing, integrating and ultimately administering the Distributed Energy Resource (DER) market in the National Grid New York Transmission Control Center. * Oversee switching operations on the National Grid transmission system. Qualifications
* A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, other Engineering disciplines, or related technical degree is desirable * 5+ years' experience in operations, maintenance, or engineering of transmission, distribution, or generation systems, or an applicable control room setting. * Knowledge of power flow analysis and associated electrical equipment * Knowledge of Energy Management Systems and SCADA systems * Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Pay attention to detail, be thorough and be organized * Effective team leader and player * Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts * Must possess or be able to obtain both a NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification & Clearance and Control authorization within one year of hire.
