Job Purpose

Overall responsibility for the business development, execution and delivery of all phases of strategically critical, high dollar value, complex contracts in support of major projects or programs, ensuring project success factors are met, while maintaining or enhancing the reputation of National Grid. These include but are not limited to scope, schedule, cost, quality, environmental, safety, communications, and security. Take business ownership of overall commercial relationships of internal and external teams carrying out project development, engineering & design, construction, commissioning and effective handover of the assets. Additionally, this position is highly involved in business case development, budget, and funding management.

The portfolio this position will typically support includes high dollar and significant projects with regulatory and stakeholder exposure. Much of the portfolio will be at the heart of New York's clean, fair and affordable energy transition ambition, and will make a significant contribution to National Grid's growth expectation.

The Commercial Director will join the Major Project's leadership team reporting directly to the Vice President and be in a role that has significant strategic, commercial, decision making, and leadership responsibilities. The Commercial Director will work closely with other Major Projects Directors, as well as other teams across National Grid playing a key role in setting the standard for commerciality throughout the organization.

Key Accountabilities
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of internal and contracted commercial support professionals.
  • Serve as the business lead, partnering with the procurement organization to develop and execute commercial contract strategies that enable the successful delivery of complex, critical projects within the Major Projects portfolio.
  • Champion a strong safety culture to achieve and uphold the highest standards of health and safety within the Major Projects team, including through effective development and management of vendor relationships.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support the development and management of value-driven contractual relationships that enable Engineering, Materials Procurement, and Construction, including the oversight of supplier performance.
  • Provide contract management support for Major Projects post-award, including negotiation of scope changes, resolution of claims, pricing adjustments, and ongoing monitoring of contractor performance metrics to ensure excellence in execution.
  • Develop and implement fit-for-purpose contracts and procurement strategies to ensure delivery of Major Projects aligned with strategic drivers (schedule, budget, quality, etc.).
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of contractor billing by supporting all invoice validation activities, including verification of quantities, quality assurance and quality control, and alignment with project targets.
  • Establish and maintain clear, consistent communication with all project stakeholders, including project updates, team meetings, executive briefings, and cross-functional coordination.
  • Ensure full compliance with Major Projects BMS requirements, project management protocols, and regulatory standards, working in partnership with team members, stakeholders, and contractors to meet defined goals and expectations.
  • Develop and gain approval for commercial and contract strategies from executive leadership, ensuring that each project and program utilizes a contract model that maximizes customer value and aligns with market conditions and strategic partnerships. This includes presenting to senior and executive leadership.
  • Implement a robust commercial risk management framework to deliver agreed project and portfolio outcomes within budget and in compliance with regulatory frameworks and prudency standards.
  • Direct and align the commercial efforts of multiple operations to ensure cohesive, consistent, and effective support of National Grid's vision, goals, and strategic priorities.
  • Foster an inclusive environment that drives continuous improvement, operational excellence, and enhanced commercial capabilities across Major Project delivery.
  • Serve as a key liaison and establish strong communication channels with all influential stakeholders-internal and external-including contractors, regulatory bodies, and other strategic partners.
Knowledge, Experience and Technical Know How Requirements
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline with a considerable breadth and depth of proven experience in commerciality and contract management, preferably within construction industry.
  • Expert Presentation Skills capable of presentation to Senior/Executive Leadership
  • Experience leading critical and complex negotiations for large programs of work, enabling successful commercial relationships between multiple entities innovatively, effectively, and efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of leading and influencing large diverse teams, with experience partnering with parallel organizations to achieve common objectives and gaining support and commitment from a wider operational group.
  • Proven ability to take calculated risks in making and owning decisions.
  • Customer and external management experience; able to influence external customers, agencies, regulators, vendors, communities and other external stakeholders.
  • Experience leading diverse teams through change and business improvement within a complex organization/program or project.
  • Proven commercial acumen; ability to manage complex commercial arrangements, including evidence of successfully developing, managing and delivering large projects through successful contractual relationships.
  • Experience developing effective go-to-market strategies for the acquisition of resources needed to deliver large capital construction projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience supporting large scale projects (500 million to 1 billion) is required, with 10+ years of experiencebeingpreferred.
  • A minimum of 3years of direct, people leadershipexperience is required.
  • Extensive experience in commercial management of capital contracts is required (at least 5yrs in construction industry is highly preferred),
  • Evidenced experience in commercial management of large scale and complex construction contracts is highly preferred.
  • Avalid driver's license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policyis required.

Upstate, NY: $180,000 - $212,000

Downstate, NY:$217,000 - $255,000

Massachusetts:$202,000 - $238,000
