Job Summary:
The Managing Editor (ME) is responsible for logistics concerned with the production and publication of Speculum. The ME is the primary liaison with the copyeditor, the proofreader, and the University of Chicago Press production team, and coordinates the internal editorial timetable with that of the production team. The Managing Editor role is a full-time position in the English Department. This position is eligible for remote work and more information will be discussed during the interview.
Target hiring range for this position will be between $56,782 -$65,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This is a one-year term position, renewable upon funding.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Oversees production of four issues of the journal annually
- Produces the internal schedule of the journal
- Ensures that all articles and reviews have the necessary components for publication
- Formats articles according to house style
- Assures that high-resolution images and permissions have been secured as needed
- Liaises with the copyeditor
- Proofreads all copyedited articles, as well as full issues at the galley stage
- Works with authors on the proofs of their articles
- Fact-checks articles as appropriate
- Proofreads galleys of every issue
- Compiles and proofreads Varia for the Back Matter, including special reports and contributor acknowledgments
- Coordinates with the production team at the Press on transmission of articles, corrections to proofs and galleys, and final publication of each issue
- Runs reports on the Editorial Manager platform
- Travels to the annual MAA meeting, Kalamazoo, and Leeds as required
- Coordinates the production and editing of quarterly podcasts

Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in any field of medieval studies (dissertation defense before 1 Dec. 2025)

- Skill and experience in academic writing
- Knowledge of Latin and other relevant languages
- Editorial experience
- Flexibility
- Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, current edition
- Meticulous attention to detail and a high level of scholarly precision

- Ability to manage large amounts of digital information
- Familiarity with Editorial Manager
- Familiarity with Dropbox
