Job Summary:

The Associate Editor (AE) is responsible for all book reviews and related tasks. Speculum is the journal of record for book reviews in medieval studies. About 75-80 reviews appear in each quarterly issue, occupying roughly 125 pages. The AE is thus responsible for soliciting, coordinating, and editing about 500 pages of material per year, working closely with a panel of Book Review Editors. Books range widely across periods, disciplines, and languages. The Associate Editor role is a full-time position in the English Department.

This position is eligible for remote work and more information will be discussed during the interview. Target hiring range for this position will be between $51,346 -$65,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This is a one-year term position, renewable upon funding.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Compiles Table of Contents for every issue
  • Oversees and compiles a quarterly list of titles sent out for review (Books Received)
  • Compiles the Brief Notices, short bibliographic entries that list the articles in edited volumes
  • Compiles and proofreads Varia for the Back Matter, including Proceedings of the Annual Meeting, with reports of MAA officers and prize citations; memoirs of deceased Fellows and Corresponding Fellows; a list of contributors to the MAA; an acknowledgment of peer reviewers; and a Table of Contents for the full year's volume
  • Formats reviews according to house style
  • Proofreads full issues of Speculum at the galley stage
  • Travels to the annual MAA meeting, Kalamazoo, and Leeds as required
  • Assists in the production of quarterly podcasts
  • Regularly checks websites and catalogs of all publishers in medieval studies
  • Prepares bibliographic notices of new books according to Speculum house style
  • Uploads these notices to Book Review Editors' lists on Dropbox
  • Coordinates with Review Editors to locate an appropriate reviewer for each book
  • Contacts reviewers, sends review invitations, and answers miscellaneous questions
  • Contacts domestic and international publishers and asks them to send hard copies (or PDFs if preferred) directly to reviewers
  • Maintains a database of all books sent out for review, with reviewers' names and dates
  • Follows up with delinquent reviewers
  • Sends completed reviews to the appropriate Review Editor for fact-checking
  • Handles regular email communication about reviews and incoming books
  • Transmits reviews to and from copyeditor
  • Guides reviews through the production process, from uploading through typesetting, proofreading, and pagination
  • Proofreads all reviews when submitted, after copyediting, and again at proof stage
  • Sends publishers tear sheets of book reviews as soon as each issue is published online

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in any field of medieval studies
  • Skill and experience in academic writing
  • Knowledge of Latin and other relevant languages
  • Editorial experience
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a high level of scholarly precision
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to manage large amounts of digital information
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, current edition
  • Familiarity with Editorial Manager and Dropbox
