Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Sports Management, or related field from an accredited college or
Two years of relevant work experience in a recreation setting (graduate assistantship experience may be considered).
Experience in one or more of the following areas: challenge course facilitation, climbing wall management, leading and organizing adventure trips.
Wilderness First Responder or ability to obtain within the first 6 months of hire.
ACCT membership and/or AORE membership.
Position Summary
The Coordinator for Outdoor Recreation is an integral part of the Department of Recreation Sports and reports to the Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation. This position is primarily responsible for the organization, promotion and evaluation of the comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Programs including adventure trips, climbing wall and outdoor equipment rental. Additionally, this position will be responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, and scheduling of student staff working within the program.

Physical Demands
This position is heavily involved in a comprehensive outdoor program which could include, but is not limited to the following activities: standing/walking for long periods; climbing; use of ladder; sitting for long periods of time; driving; bending/stooping; kneeling/squatting; reaching overhead; pushing/pulling; lifting at least 25 lbs; work demands related to a complex challenge course; view distances and distinguish potentially noxious odors.

Program Coordination and Operational Support:

  • Provide administrative support and oversight for a comprehensive outdoor recreation program.
  • Along with the Assistant Director, collaborate with other UGA departments across campus and off-campus community groups.
  • Actively seek out new partnerships with other departments, local businesses, and non-profit organizations.
  • Assist with PEDB classes co-sponsored by the Outdoor Recreation program and the Department of Kinesiology for physical education credits. Facilitate groups on high and low course elements as needed.
  • Under the guidance of the Assistant Director, develop, implement, and continually evaluate policies and procedures to guide program operation and address risk management concerns including Emergency Action Plans.
  • Under the guidance of the Assistant Director, evaluate and maintain outdoor recreation facilities and equipment.
  • Support all other components of the UGA Outdoor Recreation program (adventure trips, outdoor rental center, climbing wall, and challenge course) as necessary.

Student Staff Management:

  • Assist in the recruitment, training supervision and evaluation of student staff to facilitate experiential learning programs including monitoring and approving time worked for the student staff.
  • Assist with the ongoing student staff training program including staff meetings and staff evaluations. These facility training courses should include emergency action planning (EAP), incident response, customer care, and other facility concerns. Along with actively incorporating Departmental Vision, Mission, and Values into staff training and development.

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation, use current trends in assessment strategies to continually analyze the effectiveness of programs, services, and facilities.
  • Assist with planning programs to incorporate Divisional priorities as they relate to the Student Affairs strategic plan and student learning priorities.

Fiscal Management Support:

  • Work cooperatively with the business services staff to ensure that all operations are compliant with fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Compile records of expenses and income for trips, clinics and courses offer through the Outdoor Rec program.
