Position Summary The Department of American Studies at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full time, 9-month appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin August 1, 2025, with the possibility of renewal. We seek to hire a Visiting Assistant Professor with teaching and research experience in American Studies, or related fields, with specialization in such areas as: visual culture, performance, or literary studies; colonialism, migration, or diaspora studies; environmental studies; and/or critical race and ethnic studies. The successful candidate will also provide student mentoring and support. We especially welcome scholars with doctoral degrees in American Studies, Africana Studies, Ethnic Studies, Native American and Indigenous Studies, and other related interdisciplinary fields. Candidates with PhDs in other social science and humanities disciplines should have a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary research and pedagogy. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach courses in their research specialization as well as core American Studies courses (at both the graduate and undergraduate levels) for a 2-2 teaching load, in addition to student advising and departmental service. PhD is required at the time of the appointment, and teaching experience is preferred. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: 1. Ph.D. in American Studies, or related fields, completed by start date of appointment (August 1, 2025). 2. Teaching experience in American Studies, or a related field, at the undergraduate level.
