Overview

Beyond New Horizons, LLC (BNH) has an exciting opportunity for an Instrumentation Engineer, supporting TOS II, at Tunnel 9 in White Oak, Maryland. The Instrumentation Engineer will be working as a member of an integrated team responsible for operating and maintaining the United States Air Force Test Operations and Sustainment efforts.

Job Summary

Lead and oversee the instrumentation design, implementation, and maintenance for wind tunnel testing in close collaboration with Tunnel 9 Test Engineers, System Engineers, and Engineering Technicians. This includes managing the installation, calibration, troubleshooting, and documentation of various instrumentation systems measuring pressure, temperature, force, angle, and motion. The Instrumentation Engineer will provide technical expertise and guidance, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of data acquisition for wind tunnel experiments.

Job Duties:

    Collaborate with Tunnel 9 Test Engineers, System Engineers, and Engineering Technicians to define instrumentation requirements for wind tunnel tests, including sensor selection, system design, and data acquisition strategies.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for instrumentation systems, including calibration procedures, wiring diagrams, and troubleshooting guides, ensuring accessibility and clarity for technicians and engineers.
  • Supervise and mentor Engineering Technicians in the installation, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation systems, ensuring adherence to best practices and safety protocols.
  • Design and implement data acquisition systems in conjunction with System Engineers, including signal conditioning, data logging, and real-time data visualization, considering the needs of both testing and analysis.
  • Develop and execute test plans for verifying the functionality and accuracy of instrumentation systems, working closely with Test Engineers to align with experiment objectives.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex instrumentation issues, leveraging expertise in electronics, sensors, and data acquisition systems, and providing guidance to technicians.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in instrumentation technology and recommend improvements to enhance data quality and efficiency, considering input from all stakeholders.
  • Manage instrumentation inventory, ensuring adequate stock of sensors, cables, and other components, and communicates needs effectively to relevant teams.
  • Enforce adherence to safety regulations and best practices for working with electrical and mechanical systems, promoting a safe working environment for all team members.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics and 0 - 4 years of experience.
  • Hands-on experience in instrumentation design, installation, and maintenance, preferably in a wind tunnel or aerospace laboratory environment.
  • Strong understanding of sensor technologies, data acquisition systems, and signal processing techniques.
  • Proficiency in using electronic test equipment, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and data acquisition software.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and documentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment, working seamlessly with engineers and technicians from various disciplines.
  • Current United States Citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret clearance
  • Experience with soldering wires as small as 36 AWG.
