Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Director of the Career Center orchestrates the operations of the UNCW Career Center and provides leadership, vision and direction to attain the university's strategic goals through Career Center student support programs focusing on student success with career exploration, employment searches, and graduate school applications.

This position plays a central role in helping produce the successful career outcomes for UNCW's talented students with an emphasis on understanding the state's current workforce trends and demands. This position supervises 11 full-time staff, several graduate staff, and reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Dean of Students.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides leadership and oversight of the Career Center, its services, programs, events, staff, and budget in support of student and alumni career goals, and UNCW's and the Division of Student Affairs' missions and strategic initiatives.
  • Implements innovative approaches to support students' experiential learning, critical competencies development, career development, and job and graduate school searches with the specific goal of improving students' career readiness and career success.
  • Networks and collaborates with UNCW faculty, staff, students, employers, alumni, special guests, and other career service professionals to create career opportunities for students and help them expand their professional networks.
  • Creates campus partnerships including academic deans, department chairs, and internship coordinators, campus administrators including staff within the Chancellor's and Provost's offices, enrollment management, university advising, Advancement/Alumni Relations, Military Affairs, student success staff, Athletics, and other Student Affairs departments.
  • Develops and enhances employer relations for applied learning and employment opportunities through collaborations with the Career Center's Employer Development team, the Employer Advisory Board, and other relevant groups.
  • Evaluates the efficacy of myriad entry points to educate students on high impact practices and NACE competencies, such as student orientations, UNI, and workshops.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master's Degree in a related field such as Higher Education, Educational Leadership, Business Administration (MBA), or Public Administration (MPA), among others.
  • Experience in career development for college populations, including adult learners, graduate students, athletes, first-generation students, and underserved communities.
  • Demonstrated experience in program planning, including development, budgeting, staffing, marketing, implementation, and evaluation of career programs and services.
  • Proven experience in planning and supervising professional, administrative, and student staff members.
  • Experience leveraging state-of-the-art technologies to enhance daily programs and services.
  • Strong experience in counseling, communication, and public relations.
  • Experience applying creative approaches to soliciting broad partnerships to best engage student and alumni populations in competencies/skills (including but not limited to NACE competencies) and career obtainment and achievement.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • A doctoral degree in Higher Education, Business Administration, or related area is preferred but not required.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible experience in university career services, including an administrative leadership role.
  • Experience in supervision, budgeting, organizations planning, evaluation, and the use of current information technologies in career counseling and development.
  • Emerging understanding of role of AI for recruiters, college students, and career-seeking alumni.
  • Experience in building synergies and connections using "hub and spokes model" of campus career services.
  • Additional experience in the business/industry community, private sector hiring and recruiting, and/or career education technology and assessment planning recommended. Specialized skills in evaluating assessment data to inform program planning throughout Career Center's functional areas.
