JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Museum Registrar is being sought to support the curatorial and collections management efforts of the Matson Museum of Anthropology, including ongoing NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) and other international repatriation efforts within Penn State's Department of Anthropology.

With a collection of more than 14,000 objects, the Matson Museum is Central Pennsylvania's destination for global culture and the human experience from ancient times to the present. The Museum Registrar will form an integral part of a team that includes the Director, a part-time collections assistant, and part-time paid student interns.

The objectives of the position include establishing protocols for cataloguing, documenting, storing, and activating the Museum's collection in its new home in the Susan Welch Liberal Arts Building on Penn State's University Park campus.

The Museum Registrar will utilize critical thinking, organizational skills, and leadership abilities to complete this position's responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

  • Create, maintain, and update object records in TMS Collections and eMuseum and serve as the liaison with Gallery Systems

  • Generate, compile, and maintain legal documents, histories of use, and physical histories of permanent collection objects

  • Monitor legal and ethical implications and standard of care transactions

  • Work with the museum director in updating the collections management policy

  • Oversee internal and external object movement including packing and shipping of collection and loan objects

  • Support access to the collection for research by students, faculty, and community members

  • Provide support for museum staff users of TMS and Gallery System products, and assist with TMS training for new museum staff, interns, and volunteers

  • Supervise part-time student assistants or interns in collections management tasks when necessary

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with academic units and entities across campus, such as members of the Penn State Museum Consortium and in the community, as well as with professional organizations

The Museum Registrar will also interface with visitors, such as alumni or representatives of potential funding agencies, and work with the Director to accomplish the museum's mission and to support its strategic direction.

Some of the collections that the Museum Registrar will work with at the Matson Museum are anthropological collections, including ethnographic objects, archaeological artifacts, zooarchaeological specimens, and osteological specimens and casts.

This is a limited-term appointment funded for two years from date of hire with the possibility of renewal.

After training, the Museum Registrar will also work with various software including Microsoft Office 365, Workday, and Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.

Education and Experience:
This position will be filled at the Intermediate Professional level, which requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master's degree in museum studies at the time of appointment is preferred.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the field of collections management

  • Experience with TMS Collections relational database

  • Expertise in object handling and experience in a museum or gallery setting

  • Excellent data and time management skills and high attention to detail

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$46,400.00 - $67,300.00
