POSITION/JOB TITLE: Corporate Quality Manager DEPARTMENT: Commercial DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Vice President Commercial Operations LOCATION: Lisle, IL TRAVEL: Periodic domestic travel up to 25% Job Overview: This is a highly visible role that is responsible for managing SunCoke's quality programs in areas of product quality, processes, audits and protocols, while ensuring finished goods meet or exceed our customer expectations. Key Responsibilities:
- Manage in conjunction with VP Commercial Operations the corporate SCE plan to leverage customer blast furnace operations and cost through improved product quality initiatives.
- Lead and develop plant Quality Managers to ensure coal blend is at optimal coke quality.
- Develops, coordinates and implements quality process audits and preventative corrective action systems.
- Develops and supports all processes and procedures related to Quality.
- Coordinates efforts with customer to resolve issues regarding coal and coke quality.
- Facilitates monthly, or as required, customer meetings.
- Identifies training needs for Operations & Maintenance functions on matters impacting Quality.
- Monitors coke quality as it relates to customer contract parameters.
- Archive coal and coke quality data to optimize/model future blending and coking predictions.
- Ensure material contamination prevention and lead root cause investigations as needed
- Utilize SPC to monitor and improve processes.
- Analyze data and quality metrics to monitor performance, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to pursue excellence.
- Oversees laboratory scorecard, audits, and compliance.
- Acts as Corporate gatekeeper regarding all coal and coke quality related issues
- Monitor the coke performance through gathering and charting relevant data producing statistical reports to ensure managements understanding of compliance to contract.
- Coordinate appropriate staff and cross disciplines to drive comprehensive quality procedures and work instructions to improve quality practices.
- Ensure outside lab processes and procedures are similar to internal methods and meet ASTM standards (supplier audits)
- Oversee SCE laboratory relationships and ensure our third-party labs adhere to appropriate ASTM standards for sampling and lab analysis.
Requirements:
- BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Mining, or other relevant field.
- 10 or more years of relevant work experience in coal processing or coal testing and beneficiation.
- Strong customer-facing and supplier quality experience
- Knowledge of ISO 9000 and ASTM standards and solid understanding of quality programs, six sigma, and audit procedures. ISO 9001 Certification preferred.
- SPC is required.
- Proven track record improving quality programs, and attaining goals for plant metrics.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals at all levels within the organization and externally.
- Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to drive results.
- Ability to operate on tight deadlines with multiple priorities that are subject to frequent changes.
- Proficient in Microsoft Platforms
- Must be comfortable working independently, as well as collaborate in a team
- Self-motivated, proactive, and receptive to learning
- Work effectively in both corporate and plant environments, across all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated professionalism with a dedicated work ethic
- Six Sigma Green Belt Certification or higher
- International quality experience in heavy industry is a plus
- Knowledge & technical understanding of metallurgical coal and coke, as well as foundry coke
