Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Steam and Power Plant V or Steam and Power Plant IV engineer, perform work typical of the trade of Steam and Power Plant III engineer.

Job Description:

  • Under direct supervision, selected duties unique to, and normally required in, the trade of Steam and Power Plant III: Operate all boilers, engines, pumps, compressors, condensers, heat exchangers, generators, chillers, cooling towers, air conditioners, swimming pools, HVAC systems, chemical feed systems, Ice machines, interior water, plumbing, and sewage systems, fire suppression systems, and all other equipment assigned to the Heating Plant. Perform water treatment and testing. Read and record as necessary, all water levels, temperatures, pressures, and meter readings.

  • Under direct supervision performs duties in Employer's Preventative Maintenance program on a limited and assistive basis, to include cleaning and painting all power plant and mechanical equipment and areas.

  • Under direct supervision performs related duties as assigned or as specified in the Union Contract.

  • Obtain information from the Building Automation System.

A. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

  • Duties are performed in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, Civil Service rules and regulations, University policies and negotiated union contract. Specific direction is furnished through oral or written instructions from the Steam and Power Plant IV and the Steam and Power Plant V engineer, or supervising Steam and Power Plant III engineer.

B. GUIDELINES

  • Broad guidelines, which require interpretation and adaptation established by various Federal, State and City regulatory agencies, Board of Governors regulations, Civil Service regulations and the negotiated union contract. Maintenance and equipment operation activities established by equipment manuals and prescribed professional practices tempered by resources available. The Steam and Power Plant V engineer provides specific guidelines.

Minimal Qualifications:

1) High school diploma or equivalent.

2) Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in the maintenance and operation of steam and power plant equipment.

3) One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in a position comparable to the Steam and Power Plant II.

4) City of Chicago Stationary Engineers License (REQUIRED)

Departmental Preferences:

  • CFC Certification

  • 1 year of Boiler experience

Hours: Hours may vary depending on departmental needs.

This position requires a background check.

Salary / Hourly Rate Range

$52-$53
