Your Job

The Georgia-Pacific Wauna Mill is seeking a Project Engineer for our Power & Recovery (Utilities) Department. In this role, you will serve as the technical lead and project coordinator for routine unit outages (both major and minor) and small-scale capital projects. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment reliability, developing asset strategies, participating in root cause analyses (RCAs), and leading all equipment-related outages and capital projects.

This position is a leadership role within the Utilities Department and involves daily interaction with department team members including maintenance planners, senior buyers, asset owners, and contractors. The Project Engineer will report directly to the Utilities Department Superintendent.

Our Team

The Wauna mill, it's 800+ team members, and products are a critical part of GP's Consumer Products portfolio. The site manufactures high-profile Angel Soft, Sparkle and Vanity Fair brands. GP has invested heavily at Wauna in recent years to deliver competitive tissue and towel products, including a new tissue paper converting machine and palletizing robotics. The mill also features a recent $150M investment rebuilding a paper machine, to further the mill's competitive position. Located 1 hour North of Portland, the mill is nestled in outskirts of Astoria, OR and Clatskanie, OR. Oregon serves as a major attraction for outdoor lifestyles including hiking, mountains, or summer beach time.

What You Will Do

  • Provide clear and timely information to supervisors, peers, and hourly staff to support knowledge sharing and informed decision-making.
  • Lead equipment outages by applying both mechanical and process-related technical knowledge.
  • Compile and analyze inspection reports and operational maintenance (OM) standards to guide outage execution.
  • Collaborate with Corporate and Industry Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to implement best practices.
  • Develop and lead capital project planning and execution, including scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and cost control.
  • Plan and execute unit and annual equipment outages (e.g., boilers, turbine generators, lime kiln), including creating work scopes, identifying and procuring materials, and managing logistics.
  • Participate in RCAs and drive timely implementation of corrective actions.
  • Improve departmental efficiency by defining and executing effective asset strategies.
  • Develop maintenance plans, update technical drawings, maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), and conduct routine job walks with contractors.
  • Maintain and update critical equipment documentation (e.g., OM manuals, P&IDs).

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering OR 3-5 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment in a maintenance or engineering role.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying, leading, and executing improvement initiatives within a team setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Project, Excel, and Word.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • 2+ years of experience in a Power & Recovery Department or power plant environment.
  • Working knowledge of systems including boilers, solid-fuel handling, air/steam/feedwater systems, turbine generators, evaporators, concentrators, recausticizing systems, and lime kilns.
  • Experience with tools/software such as AutoCAD/Autodesk, ParcView, PI ProcessBook, PI Vision, KCF Smart Diagnostics, and SAP (or similar platforms)
