Lean Manager

What you will do

The multi-site lean manager is responsible, under the guidance of the director of operations and in close partnership with the plant managers and plant CI managers, for advancing lean within the business unit, specifically in terms of practice, adaptation and cultural integration. Through the development and implementation of specific strategies, roadmaps/action plants, training and active advocacy, the incumbent will influence the sites to a new culture. They will demonstrate success through increased operational and business metrics performance. The work of this role will impact all customer metrics including conversion cost and safety.

The incumbent will be responsible for aligning the processes, measurements, standards, and efforts across assigned plants with the primary focus areas of lean and continuous improvement.

The incumbent is fully accountable for supporting and leading the creation of an inclusive and positive organizational culture while assisting with development of a bench of lean skilled talent in the organization, that is prepared to take on larger assignments, is diverse in representation.

How you will do it

  • Drives Plants at: Waynesboro, Pa; Soracaba, Brazil; Trois Rivieres, QC; and Federalsburg, MD

  • Supports deployment of both short term and mid-long-term lean and cost reduction plans to accelerate continuous improvement of the plant.

  • Leads the lean deployment plan across the Factories: Hoshin Planning, KPI Scorecard management and learning, to deliver improved and predictable business results. Drives the applicable Johnson Controls Manufacturing System (JCMS) principles to facilitate cultural transformation.

  • Ensures that the regional strategic breakthroughs and all local Continuous Improvement Plans are actioned through Value Stream Maps, Standard Work and necessary KPI scorecards. Scorecards are required to be in place and well managed to deliver on the key changes which are measured weekly during meetings.

  • Drives lean training and overall execution; helps to drive the training through the use of Lean academies on the shop floor, benchmarking experiences, and daily CI ideation. Through word and action develops an organization that embraces lean and actively improves the operations through use of appropriate lean methodologies and tools.

  • Drives the creation, adoption and regular use of standard work. Ensures all stakeholders are aware of 'off-standard' issues and supports recovery plans and actions.

  • Drives the culture of true Gemba walks and to ensure the leadership is supporting the associates to drive high performing teams at each area of the plants.

  • Supports the Lean Implementers with coaching to proven improvement methodologies and ensures successful completion of their projects.

  • Identifies waste and opportunities for the business to improve, as well as reporting and celebrating past successes in these areas from a business perspective.

  • Ensures JCMS and lean plans are aligned with the global JCMS drive of One Company, One standard, One Process. Contributes to the development and improvement of the methodologies within the larger JCMS roadmap.

  • Identifies, shares and leverages best practices, including a drive for a technology roadmap, which may include 3D printing, digitization, etc.

  • Leads the cultural change of JCI employees (from firefighting culture to working according to standards), including leading teams in their Lean competence development. Utilize key JCMS cultural customer centric methodologies.

  • Acts as challenger and catalyst in changing leadership behavior; respectfully challenge the status quo and act as a role model for Lean thinking.Raises the performance and talent level in the plants through active engagement with leaders and employees.

  • Mentors, coaches and trains throughout assigned organization.

  • Assists in the identification and completion of model Lean lines/cells, and then extend to through the plants

  • Using standard tracking and reporting systems drives operational / project performance and assures timely completion and achievement of product / process quality and savings goals.

  • Guides Selection of and develops lean implementers within the plants

  • Assists other Regional Lean Managers/Directors in any strategic initiative that will help in compliance to standards, implementing new systems, and designing creative solutions that will continuously improve the plant.

  • Assists in raising the engagement and organizational health within assigned region; creates an inclusive culture through role modeling, setting of expectations and course correcting as needed

  • Works with internal and external management and senior-level contacts to keep abreast of business needs and changes, understands and shares new developments in the industry and operations domain for the purpose of achieving business goals and to support the smooth running of operations within the business unit.

  • Is an active and visible community participant; raising the awareness of our sites and their local impact while also increasing the positive impact the site has on the community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent operations and change management related experience.

  • Leader with past functional process expertise within Operations (preferably running factories or manufacturing engineering).

  • Leadership experience with a multidisciplinary team; demonstrated ability to lead a complex organization in a multi-site construct

  • Strong understanding of business processes and key business metrics to be achieved

  • Experience in with kaizen Gembas and thorough understanding JCMS or other type production systems

  • Proven track record in change management and influencing skills up, down and across the organization

  • Strong knowledge of lean, process improvement and quality management tools

  • Project Management skills and passion for continuous improvement
