We are seeking nuclear engineering staff to support the development of and support the application of innovative safeguards solutions to current and emerging fuel cycles. This position resides in the Nondestructive Measurement Science and Technology (NMST) Group in the Safeguards and Treaty Verification Section within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division and National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The NMST group focuses on research, development, and application of nondestructive assay systems and analysis methods that support international and domestic safeguards. The group draws on the Laboratory's outstanding facilities and works closely with leading researchers in other science and technical areas at the lab such as nuclear and chemical sciences and engineering and nuclear fuel cycle and reactor systems.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide nuclear engineering support to NMST projects and R&D activities

  • Support group's development activities in sponsor engagements, preparation of proposals and white papers, participation in workshops, etc.

  • Exercise scientific integrity in proposing, performing, and communicating research.

  • Ensure all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL policies, standards, and procedures.

  • Exemplify a commitment to excellence in research, operations, and community engagement, and work cooperatively to leverage scientific capabilities across ORNL.

  • Support NMST collaborations, professional society involvement, and technical events to advance the reputation of NMST and the standing of the group as a whole

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with DOE National Laboratories (or similar R&D organizations) or industry.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

  • Export control, no clearance: This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

  • HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

  • Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

  • Visa sponsorship:Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
