Summary

Responsible for preparing and filing indirect tax returns for the entire Weisiger Group enterprise, including Carolina CAT and LiftOne. Includes managing relationships with operations to assist with customers' tax questions, exemption information and various issues as they arise. Proactively seek opportunities for efficiency improvements including leveraging systems, e-filing opportunities, and automation tools as available.
Essential Functions
  • Sales Tax
    • Prepare and submit all filings for each entity and jurisdiction as required in accordance with sales tax rules and regulations.
    • Manage customer exemptions and setup in Vertex to ensure proper certificates are on file and proper exempt status is maintained in software applications throughout Weisiger Group subsidiaries.
    • Perform a quarterly review of exempt transactions to ensure transactions classified as exempt have underlying support in the event of an audit.
    • Develop and administer a process for periodic customer campaigns to request updated information.
    • Work with operations and credit team to answer questions and resolve billing disputes and issues as it relates to sales tax and other miscellaneous taxes (i.e. heavy equipment tax, etc.).
  • Use tax
    • Review all use tax accounts monthly for accuracy for all amounts accrued by AP. Including pulling invoices for all amounts accrued over our threshold, reviewing if use tax should be accrued for invoice, and reversing all entries that are not correct.
    • Perform a quarterly review of accounts known to be problematic for use tax and accrue as needed.
  • Reconcile all sales and use tax accounts monthly in clear, concise manner utilizing SAP and Vertex.
  • Sales Tax Reserve monitoring
    • Make all monthly entries for Sales Tax Reserve for all entities. Prepare Sales Tax Reserve accrual workpapers review with Senior Manager to ensure accurate reserve is recorded.
  • Audit management
    • Coordinate any indirect tax audits including sales tax, excise tax, and heavy equipment tax.
  • Indirect Tax Registrations
    • Review sales by jurisdiction monthly and register for new sales & use tax filing obligations, business license applications, or other miscellaneous taxes that may apply for Weisiger Group and its subsidiaries to comply with laws in applicable states or local jurisdictions. Prepare applications any subsidiary needed and make available for senior manager review.
  • Heavy Equipment Tax
    • Prepare returns and submit payment quarterly for all heavy equipment tax filings. Prepare annual applications for Heavy Equipment tax.
  • Excise Tax
    • Remit excise tax deposits semimonthly. Prepare and mail excise tax return quarterly, including saving down all invoices and obtaining calculation support from operations if needed.
  • Utilize Alteryx as needed for maintaining current workpapers used and develop additional automated workflows to improve efficiencies
  • Actively participate in LiftOne ERP (SAP) Implementation as it relates to sales tax integration.
  • Support Vertex integrations for LiftOne's ERP implementation and future ERP upgrades and implementations. Depending on candidate's skill set, opportunity for being the Team Lead for all current and future Vertex integrations and upgrades.
  • Actively participate in workshops, make recommendations and be champion for change management to lead trainings for impacted users (i.e. credit team and coordinators)
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory responsibilities at this time however career growth opportunities within the Tax Department can be considered. Also this role can provide opportunities to work with and lead tax associate on projects and various compliance task as team manages workload across the department.

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; and
  • Two plus years' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Computer Skills
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
  • SAP
  • Vertex Experience preferred and other sales tax platforms such as Avalara is considered
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) candidate preferred
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to identify cause-effect relationships and interrelated business activities. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
