Job Description

Albemarle is hiring for a Lead Mining Engineer - Studies at our Kings Mountain Lithium project located near Charlotte, NC.

The Lead Mining Engineer - Studies will lead and coordinate the mining engineering function and associated activities for the Kings Mountain Lithium project. The project is an advanced stage open pit mine with a multi-decade resource base, located in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and progressing through the various study phases with the goal of entering into execution phase at the completion of study. It is one of the few lithium mining projects in the United States and offers an exceptional career opportunity. Kings Mountain is a charming town located less than 45 minutes from the Charlotte, NC metropolitan area.

This position is part of the lithium resources group reporting to the Director, Technical Services for the Kings Mountain project. The Lead Mining Engineer is a high visibility role within the team and serves as the basis for multiple career pathways, likely transitioning to the Kings Mountain Technical or Operations team at the conclusion of the study phase.Based at site, this role is offered on a flexible hybrid schedule.

What You Will Do

Essential Functions

  • Lead the delivery of mine planning and engineering work to support the evaluation, design and execution of the Kings Mountain Lithium project
  • Complete the necessary trade-off studies and evaluations to the appropriate study level to ensure optimization and longevity of the resource while maximizing value for Albemarle
  • Delivery of associated plans, reports, and documentation for each phase of study as the project progresses through PFS, FS, and execution
  • Preparation of budget, capital and operating cost estimates for the Kings Mountain mining operations, and collaborate with other core departments in the development of their operating budgets and capital projects
  • Develop standards and procedures within the mining engineering discipline to allow safe and productive mining when entering operations
  • Evaluate the selection of mining equipment and facilitate the implementation of the chosen fleetin conjunction with concentrator delivery requirements
  • Participate in community and regulatory items as needed, including: town halls, regulatory reviews, community sessions, hearings, tours, and any other request as needed
  • Establish safe and productive mining practices and be a go-to subject matter expert for the project team; champion personal, community, and environmental safety above all else
  • Liaise with plant personnel, technical services disciplines, consultants, and vendors involved in the project on all matters related to mine site layout, mining engineering, mining operations, and trade offs

Competencies

  • Demonstrated capability with open pit mine design and scheduling software
  • Experience with strategic mine planning strategies, tactics, and implementation
  • Experience with pit optimization and trade-off studies, including financial evalution
  • Ability to develop and review mine operating and capital cost estimates
  • Open pit drill and blast design and operations capability
  • Familiarity with mining equipment OEMs and selection
  • Ability to work flexibly and effectively with team members geographically separated across multiple time-zones
  • Ability to collaborate and influence across different functions, including mining and process operations, technical services, environmental and corporate
  • Ability to build relationships both internal and external to the organization, including with technical experts and vendors

What You Bring

Required:

  • Minimum B.S. or Engineering degree in Mining or related field
  • 10+ years of mine engineering and operation's experience
  • Experience in open pit mining studies, with operations and mine planning experience desirable
  • Advanced experience with mine design and scheduling packages, including optimization
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MSHA regulations

Preferred:

  • Experience evaluating and implementing new mining technologies is beneficial
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills desirable
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with Community Affairs
  • Multi-commodity experience highly regarded
  • International experience (outside the US) highly regarded
  • Related engineering degrees with appropriate experience will be considered
