The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) seeks an experienced, strategic, and collaborative domain expert to serve as its next Executive Director of the Biologic Resources Laboratory and Attending Veterinarian for the Animal Care and Use Program. The University seeks a dynamic leader who will embrace UIC's distinctive profile as Chicago's only public (R1) research university, supporting its mission to provide the broadest access to the highest levels of educational, research, and clinical excellence. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR), Joanna Groden, PhD, who also serves as the Institutional Official for the animal care and use program, the Executive Director will assume leadership of the BRL during a unique time as the BRL closes out the long-term, successful leadership under the prior director, a $25M renovation of the central facility and as the program implements new electronic resources in support of improving work processes and facilitating research. The new Executive Director will have the opportunity to lead a dedicated team of five veterinarians and 60+ FTEs at an exciting time for the research enterprise at UIC, overseen by a VCR who has set an ambitious, aspirational, and collaborative commitment to the mission and vision of UIC as a major comprehensive urban research university for the 21st century. UIC will consider the Executive Director for a courtesy faculty appointment, depending on candidate-specific qualifications and interest. Additionally, the VCR is supportive of candidates who are interested in engagement with organizations representing the broader animal research community, such as AAALAC International. The Executive Director's key responsibilities include: Program Leadership and Management Veterinary Care Compliance and Education Strategic Planning and Budgeting Stakeholder Engagement Personal and Professional Qualifications The successful candidate must have the following credentials: Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) from an American Veterinary Medical. Association (AVMA)-accredited institution Certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Active Illinois veterinary license or ability to obtain licensure within 8 months of hiring Active APHIS accreditation (Category I or II) or ability to obtain within 8 months of job offer Practitioner license from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to prescribe, dispense, administer and conduct research involving controlled substances The Vice Chancellor for Research and university stakeholders more generally anticipate and appreciate that each candidate will possess strengths in different measure. Nonetheless, the successful candidate will bring a majority of the following qualities to the role: Ten years of experience in an animal care and use program within a research-intensive academic or biomedical environment, with at least five years of experience in a leadership role Subject matter expertise with USDA and PHS regulations and the AAALAC accreditation process Experience managing facilities for the care and use of large numbers of animals in diverse, multidisciplinary research and instructional programs in academia, preferably within a unionized environment Strong management and leadership skills, including exceptional team leadership, training, coaching, and mentoring ability. Aptitude for leading through change Ability to motivate and inspire both junior and senior staff Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for a consultative and collaborative approach to planning and management that matches the UIC process and culture Experience in building and maintaining collaborative relationships with various stakeholders Highly developed interpersonal, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills To Apply The University of Illinois Chicago has retained Opus Partners to support this recruitment.
