CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Facilities Mechanical Rotating Equipment Technician

Function Statement:

Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of Mechanical systems and equipment to include structural welding. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs rotating equipment and systems. Rotating equipment includes, but is not limited to: Pumps, compressors, gearboxes, Belt drives, blowers, fans. Fabricates and repairs structural steel components (e.g., ladders, handrails, brackets, anchors, frames, animal pens and gates). Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.

Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; properly completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operates department vehicles; performs other duties as assigned. Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24-hour emergency call.

Job Duties:

Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties and other job-related duties as required.

Performs Rotating Equipment Technical Specialties (70%)

Rotating Equipment Maintenance and Repair:

Installs, maintains, and repairs rotating equipment (e.g., pumps, compressors, air compressors blowers, fans). Installs, maintains, and repairs rotating equipment components including but not limited to bearings, belts, bases plates, couplings, gears, mechanical seals, shafts, and sheaves. Performs and interprets vibration readings. Aligns rotating equipment and related components. Performs basic rotating equipment PMs. Performs Structural welding.

General Duties (30%)

Technical Support:

Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes. Documents regulatory compliance tests. Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff. Troubleshoots and resolves field problems. May assist lower-level technicians. Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs. Updates building drawings. Participates on emergency response teams.

Communication / Record Keeping:

Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders. Requests equipment and materials required to complete tasks. Inform customers when tasks are completed. Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed.

Other Department Duties:

Participates in professional development/ continuing education activities: obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc. Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations. Participates on emergency response teams. Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department. May participate on committees. Performs other duties as assigned.

Read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as built drawings. Read, understand and apply safety standards and practices (e.g., hazard communication, infection prevention, lock-out/ tag-out). Read, interpret and apply technical manuals and systems specifications. Follow applicable trade specific codes, standards and regulations. Learn technical skills and apply new knowledge to solve problems. Select and use hand, power and machine tools. Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships. Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; use algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Apply engineering principles, load calculations, accepted techniques and equipment required to lift and move extremely large or heavy objects. Locate, disable and enable electrical disconnects and shut-offs. instruct others to perform a task, provide guidance and expert advice about technical systems or processes,

Skills:

Rigging. Structural Welding Problem solving/Troubleshooting. Time management Conflict management (e.g. handling complaints, identifying issues and negotiate with others). Basic computer (e.g., data entry, data retrieval, electronic communication, internet searches, navigate and retrieve information from websites). Customer service (e.g. demonstrate empathy, meet quality standards, actively look for ways to help others). ac/dc theory planning and prioritizing work, resource management, troubleshooting mechanical systems,

Minimum Classification Requirements:

High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; two years experience in maintenance trade, machinist trade and related equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience; Efficient skills and knowledge in using tools and equipment. A valid drivers license. Successful completion of probationary period. obtain the following during the probationary period: valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card.

Desired Qualifications:

Associates/technical degree or Vocational certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field; boiler operators license (e.g., low pressure, high pressure); valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card. basic understanding of university building design standards (BDS) related to the maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment; basic understanding of the project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors. Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time.

Unusual Work Conditions:

May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time. May work in cramped spaces.
