West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), part of the WVU system of campuses located in Beckley, WV, is currently accepting applications for a Lead Plumber/Carpenter-Trade Specialist Lead II. About the Opportunity The Lead Plumber/Carpentry - Trade Specialist Lead II position directs the work of a crew(s) of maintenance helpers, trades workers, and other assigned personnel while performing both installation of new construction and general maintenance of existing facilities utilizing journeyman level plumbing skills. What you'll do: Lead
- Functions as a team leader, providing guidance to trade specialists and others support personnel as required. Follows procedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion, ensuring proper quality and quantity. Inspects completed work assignments and helps to ensure quality control. Ensures that proper safety procedures, equipment and personal protective equipment are used while performing job duties.
- Receive work orders. Interfaces with work control, supervisor and requesting party to finalize project needs and scope. Assist supervisor with multi-craft projects related to overall work assignments. Communicates work schedules and goals to employees and customers, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assignments
- Provides continual inspection of assigned area to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule, recommends to the supervisor major repair need, assists supervisor in updating deferred maintenance list
- Determines and recommends to the supervisor the needs of the project in regard to crew size, types of crafts, material availability, equipment, paperwork safety checks to maintain proper work and material flow in order to maintain schedule.
- Provides daily verbal reports on actual progress versus project progress to supervisor. Maintains the original scope of project to ensure project cost control. Informs supervisor of needed discipline and performance problems. Ensures that work requests, materials requisitions, weekly reports, and invoices necessary to complete assignments according to Facilities operation.
Plumbing - Maintenance
- Individual will have responsibility to read and review prints on new and existing building projects for repair or construction associated with specific job duties and expertise. Individual will also develop as built sketches of completed projects
- Individual will maintain knowledge of state, federal and local codes and requirements pertaining to maintenance and construction. Individual will attend project meetings and interact with contractors, vendors and engineers as needed.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs lavatory sinks, water closets, sprinkler systems, domestic water, distilled water systems, sewage systems, and de-ionized water systems. This will include such fixtures as hot water tanks, water coolers, water filters, ice machines, dish machines, water treatment systems for cooling and heating water, training room equipment, and swimming pool equipment.
- Repairs, maintains, and installs high and low pressure gas systems such as compressed air, natural gas, nitrogen, oxygen, and gas fire extinguishing systems. Repairs, maintains, and installs vacuum systems for mechanical and laboratory use.
- Operates test equipment to inspect and diagnose piping systems, steam traps, heat exchangers, and valves. Operates hand tools and power equipment such as drain snake, grinder, drill press, pipe-threading machine, pipe cutters, power saw, brazing equipment, air compressor, and various other tools as needed.
- Must maintain safe working conditions in steam tunnels, trenches, manholes, ceiling space, crawl space, and other working areas utilizing safety devices such as harness, shoring for trench work, ventilation fans for pit and tunnel work, ground fault, and protective clothing when needed.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs chilled water and heating water distribution systems along with all associated valves, tanks, air bleeders, and coils.
- Shall operate equipment such as hole saws, reciprocating saws, concrete saws, and hammer drills to penetrate walls, beams, floors, and other barriers for the purpose of installing plumbing systems. Shall install proper supports and hangers for piping and fixtures to ensure safety.
Carpentry - Maintenance
- Fabricates, installs, and/or repairs all types of cabinets, counters, benches, chairs, tables, shelves, and wooden furniture including plastic laminate work; various types of ceiling consisting of suspended ceiling (grid work and tile), 12" x 12" staple or glue up, etc.; various types of floor coverings including hardwood, linoleum, carpet, floor tile, etc.; all window frames, wooden sashes, sills, screens, Venetian blinds, and curtain rods. Builds and installs boards for window fans and air conditioners. Installs window air conditioners.
- Installs all types of interior and exterior doors (wood or metal) including frames, jambs, door stops, interior and exterior trim and associated hardware such as hinges, locks, closures, panic hardware, etc.; all interior and exterior walls and wall covering including partitions, paneling, siding, wallpaper, plastic wall covering, etc.
- Installs interior and exterior walls, partitions, paneling, siding, wallpaper, plaster wall coverings, insulation, wood trim (i.e. moldings, casings, baseboards), metal studding; installs and finishes drywall.
- Installs and repairs all types of roofs including rafters, sheathing, wood or asphalt shingles. Constructs forms for concrete including expansion joints and wire mesh. Constructs ramps, concrete shoot, etc. Works in placement and finishing of concrete. Erects scaffolding, rigging, and ladders for construction of structures above ground level. Fabricates, installs, or repairs all permanent or temporary shelters, wooden steps, handrails, wheel chair ramps, barricades, ladders, shipping crates, pallets, etc.
- Operates hand tools and power tools related to the carpentry craft. Installs plastic laminates, as they are applied to a variety of surfaces.
- Interprets blueprints and specifications. Ensures that all local, state, and federal building codes are maintained. Maintains a clean work area.
- Develops requisitions for parts, supplies, etc. from warehouse and tool crib ensuring timely delivery and sequencing.
- Install drywall, cement board or FRP. Tape, mud and sand and smooth walls.
- Will perform general painting duties, such as: painting walls, ceilings, trim, and furniture using enamel/latex paints with brushes, rollers, and low pressure sprayers; patches and prepares surfaces for painting to include finishing drywall or similar tasks requiring basic painting skills.
General
- Ensures that all local, state, and federal building codes are maintained.
- Works in areas designated as confined spaces.
- Maintains an organized work area to include cleanliness, safety, and security of materials.
- Assist with building maintenance requests; ability to diagnose and repair various equipment as needed. This may include, but is not limited to, electrical repairs, such as replacing switches, lamps, ballasts, outlets, breaker resets. Responsible for troubleshooting circuits up to 277 VAC, single phase.
- Performs all general maintenance duties related to mechanical equipment systems; this is not limited to, but may include routine maintenance and repairs on condensing and chilled water pumps, air handling units, cooling towers, fan coil units.
- Must have the ability and knowledge to diagnose and repair pneumatic systems and controls.
- Coordinates the return of materials to warehouse that are not needed for project completion.
- Lead must be willing to participate in University offered training classes that pertain to their job classification in order to keep up with changes in technology and codes to ensure that all University building codes are maintained.
- Will be required to perform Roads and Grounds work; this will include, but is not limited to, shoveling walkways, operating snow removal machinery (blower, broom), maintaining barrier free entries and exits; applying de-icing products.
- Operates, services and maintain all grounds equipment, such as trucks, tractors, large seeders, riding mowers, snow removal, skid loaders, tilt bed trucks and steep slope mowing equipment.
- Operates trash compactor truck and drives vans on special occasions (graduation/homecoming).
- Operates various hand and power tools and equipment in performance of duties such as brooms, mops, rakes, shovels, dollies, hand trucks, vacuums, shampooers, power buffing machines, lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc.
- Review requests for set-ups. Move tables, chairs, AV or any other items necessary for campus event or program. Clean up afterwards and move furniture back to storage room.
- Cleans up after projects or tasks to make sure space is clean and ready for use.
Keys/Locks
- Rekeys locks. Repairs, replaces, or modifies all door hardware such as locks, hinges, closer stops, and coordinators. Repairs or adjusts door swing so it will operate correctly.
- Makes all keys, either original or duplicate, by impression, duplication, or coding.
- Performs building maintenance for all door security hardware.
- Provides complete written and computerized records of keying systems to all Facilities maintained buildings.
- Opens file cabinets and security files, repairs or installs new locks on cabinets; fabricates or repairs parts, levers, and springs for locks that are no longer available.
- Performs maintenance and replacement of handicap door hardware (mechanical, electronic, and electrical).
- Recognizes, interprets, and designs all levels of keying systems so that top level security is maintained at all times, making a more efficient and convenient working system.
- Works with Building Supervisors and Supervisors in designing, implementing, and day-to-day operation of key and lock systems.
- Provides repairs and coordinates with Security in emergency situations such as damaged door locks, safe locks, file cabinets, and key identification. Documents key codes.
- Must be able to install, repair, and maintain all electronic locks. Works closely with electronic personnel to ensure proper operations of same.
- Will be required to operate computers utilizing various software programs, such as: work management software, C-Bord and Onity lock systems, key data bases, code source, and engraving machines.
- Updates electronic access of Facilities Management personnel within the Onity and C-Bord access data bases (assigning personnel to templates for access).
- Performs repairs and maintains proper function of ADA openers (mechanical or electrical).
- Operates all equipment trucks, key machines, grinders, and associated locksmithing equipment. Utilizes computer software to cut, list, and track keys and associated locking mechanisms.
Other
- Assists supervisor in disciplinary action.
- Must have ability to utilize a computer, respond to emails and complete electronic work orders.
- This position will require a flexible work schedule and the ability to respond to emergency situations which may require additional hours, and/or call-in.
- Performs other duties associated with a Campus Service Worker.
- Create a work order if you detect an issue that needs repaired.
- Order supplies or identify if equipment is not working.
- Performs other duties as assigned or as directed.
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm Pay Grade: 15
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Must have experience in one of the following:
- 2 years experience in general trades building maintenance experience in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades.
- Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade.
- Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational craft
trades program.
- One (1) year experience leading and/or training others.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Demonstrated familiarity with industry-specific tools and equipment and their use, including basic and specialized hand tools (e.g. wrenches, plumbing hand tools, cutting and bending tools/equipment, basic welding equipment, machine threading and hand threading equipment, and plumbing test equipment).
- Demonstrated ability to identify and operate several types of industry-specific power equipment such as sewer snakes, cameras, hydro-jetters, following proper operating procedures.
- Demonstrated the ability to read and interpret building plans and working drawings to determine equipment and materials and sequence of pipe installations required for the job.
- Demonstrated ability to properly inspect structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent holes for pipes in walls and floors using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob.
- Demonstrated ability to make cuts and openings in beams, ceilings, floors, roofs, and walls to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings using hand tools and power tools.
- Demonstrated ability to cut and thread pipes with the use of pipe cutters, cutting torches, and pipe threading machines.
- Demonstrated ability to bend pipe to required angle by use of pipe threading machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand.
- Demonstrated ability to appropriately assemble and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals such as iron, steel, brass, and lead; and non-metals such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic using hand and power tools.
- Demonstrated ability to appropriately join pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, cement, or plastic solvent.
- Demonstrate proper technique used to caulk joints.
- Demonstrate proper technique used to connect the pipe system to outside water or sewer lines.
- Demonstrated ability to fill pipe system with water or air and read pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.
- Demonstrate proper techniques used to install and hook up plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, showers, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
- Demonstrate proper procedure for a final check of the system to ensure that it works properly.
- Demonstrated ability to trace troubles in existing plumbing by replacing worn parts of valves and other fixtures, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains and lines.
- Demonstrated ability to repair existing piping systems by cutting out defective pipe, replacing with new, and sealing the connections.
- Demonstrated proper techniques used to reroute or extend piping systems.
- Demonstrated ability to inspect, make routine repairs/adjustments to maintain equipment and tools in proper and safe working condition.
