Job Description

Responsibilities of Assistant Superintendent of Road & Bridge include:

    Serves as the Project Manager for construction projects assigned by County Engineer or Supervisor and performed by county crews, including projects such as road construction, pavement maintenance, gravel road maintenance, stormwater drainage, pipe installation, bridge construction and maintenance, signing and marking, work zone signing, mowing and brush control, ROW access management; completes research, calculations, bencharking and costing for routine and non-routine projects; writes and submits work orders for project tasks and assigns work to Foreman and the necessary crews; monitors work completion to ensure adherance to standards and requirements.
  • Oversees the Road Maintenance division's ice control and snow removal functions by ensuring effective training programs for crews and snow operations supervisors; enesures compliance with established snow removal plans and updates plans; contributes to the safety of the traveling public through the oversight of safety initiatives; practices, observes, and promotes safe work and operating methods.
  • Oversees and maintains customer service requests and workorder management; meets with Johnson County residents when they call in with concerns about improper drainage of their ditches or the condition of their road or any over grown brush and weeds that may cause a safety hazard; writes up service requests; completes research for addressing drainage concerns and prepares drawings of work to be completed; assigns work to foreman and crews; oversees the management of the computerized maintenance database for complete and incomplete work.
  • Performs the duties of the Work Place Safety Coordinator (WPSC) for all of Public Works. Attends monthly Vehicle Safety Review Committee and WPSC meetings. Trains department staff on emergency response procedure plans and expected actions. Be prepared to lead department staff through crisis events. Participate in drills and exercises. Coordinate the dissemination of safety training information to staff. Have a designated backup to ensure departmental continuity.


Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

A high school diploma or equivalent, and an acceptable driving record are required. Nine years of progressively responsible work in road construction or maintenance including crew supervision and project management. One year of experience supervising, leading, directing, or coordinating the work of other employees.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Preferred Job Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or Safety Management; One year of experience in the areas of equipment repair and maintenance, truck driving, paving, drainage work, and project safety.

Education/Experience Substitutions:

Experience may be substituted for degree. Education may be substituted for experience.

Excessive standing and/or walking: 20%

Exposure to extreme temperatures.

Lifting weight: 50lbs.

On call/stand-by work required.
