Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Transportation Digital Delivery Director, we will count on you to:

Provide Leadership and Vision

* Oversee the overall strategy and day-to-day operations of our Digital Delivery cross sector for the Transportation Business Group (TBG), guiding Regional Digital Delivery Leads and Area Digital Delivery Leads in support of serving our highways, bridges, transit, freight rail, maritime, federal and aviation markets.

* Develop, expand, and implement a 3D-first model-based design culture across TBG projects, ensuring a consistent approach to digital design practices across multiple market sectors and business classes.

* Coordinate the growth and structure of TBG digital design and delivery career paths at the area, national, and business class levels, in alignment with our current five-year plan for growth, and continue expanding on this vision as regions identify staffing needs and build their digital teams.

* Set clear vision, leverage effective communication strategies, and apply strong problem-solving skills in alignment with HDR's digital delivery vision.

* Maintain a 50% utilization target by actively participating as a Digital Delivery Lead on HDR's most complex and large-scale transportation projects, ensuring successful technical execution, schedule adherence, budget alignment, and deliverable excellence.

Drive Digital Delivery Excellence

* Grow the Digital Delivery program to support Virtual Design & Construction (VDC), BIM, data acquisition, clash detection, 4D construction phasing, 5D cost estimation, and digital asset management across various transportation infrastructure projects.

* Serve as a key participant in major transportation projects and pursuits, offering digital delivery focused reviews, go or no-go input, and developing or overseeing scope and fee for critical digital delivery work.

* Oversee and direct digital delivery practice groups, championing best practices, standards, guidelines, templates, and resources.

* Work closely with project teams to place specialized digital design and BIM staff on high-profile or complex transportation projects.

* Oversee program-wide digital delivery utilization and technical capabilities, ensuring that best practices are consistently applied to achieve schedule, budget, and deliverable excellence on Transportation projects.

Coordination and Collaboration

* Represent TBG in cross-business group digital design coordination, ensuring alignment of digital design initiatives that span multiple practices and regions.

* Collaborate with the TBG Technology Director to align on TBG-wide technology strategies, hardware and software needs, cloud-based services, and vendor feedback that supports digital delivery.

* Coordinate directly with Program Delivery Service teams including Project Controls, Geospatial Information Management, and Visualization and Interactive Design teams to fully integrate digital delivery solutions into our project workflows.

* Maintain regular contact with BIM and digital design software vendor partners to manage HDR initiatives, coordinate software updates or enhancements, and advocate for project needs.

Standards, Best Practices and Training

* Lead the development and maintenance of BIM and digital delivery guidelines, standards, best practices, and templates that support efficient project execution and quality assurance.

* Oversee the sourcing, creation, and delivery of BIM and digital delivery-related training, including use of Autodesk-based and Bentley-based design platforms.

* Demonstrate an in-depth working knowledge of common data environments such as ProjectWise and Autodesk Construction Cloud.

* Coordinate with HDR's Applied Technology Office to support transportation technology initiatives that relate to digital delivery, including centers of excellence and vendor platform engagement.

Strategic Growth and Innovation

* Identify, sponsor, and advocate for new and innovative software solutions, workflows, and use cases that expand and improve our ability to deliver model-based transportation design and construction projects.

* Lead the preparation of digital design and BIM scope and fee proposals on significant pursuits, in close coordination with marketing teams and technical leaders.

* Leverage industry recognition, publications, and conference engagements to enhance HDR's reputation as a leader in digital design and delivery.

Team Building and Mentorship

* Collaborate with TBG Digital Delivery Enterprise Services, providing mentorship, training, and alignment with project delivery teams to ensure consistent delivery and implementation of digital practices.

* Foster a collaborative, inclusive culture that attracts and retains top digital delivery talent and encourages continuous learning, innovation, and high-performing teams.

* Maintain strong relationships with project managers, operations leaders, and human resources to support staff and managing our digital delivery resources.

* Provide ongoing staff development and recognition for cross-sector team, driving retention and attraction of top talent while ensuring alignment with HDR's core values and strategic objectives.

* Be a champion and advocate for cross-sector staff by promoting collaboration, professional growth, and cohesive digital delivery practices across all TBG disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

* Master's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Information Technology, or a related field.

* Professional registration such as a Professional Engineer license or an advanced certification in BIM, VDC, or project management.

* Familiarity with frameworks such as ISO-19650 for information management, specifically as they apply to infrastructure projects.

* Experience leading digital transformation programs, including adoption of new software, establishing training curricula, or pioneering proprietary tools.

* Recognition within the industry for delivering large-scale programs and innovative vendor coordination, supported by published articles, conference presentations, or related activities.

Technical Expertise

* Extensive knowledge of BIM processes, design development, construction documents, technical and engineering standards, and a proven ability to integrate both civil and architectural disciplines.

* Demonstrated proficiency with clash detection, 4D construction phasing, 5D Cost estimating, data acquisition, digital twins, and digital asset management platforms and capabilities.

* In-depth familiarity with Bentley and Autodesk design suites, as well as common data environment platforms such as ProjectWise and Autodesk Construction Cloud.

* Strong background in digital delivery and BIM management for complex transportation infrastructure projects, including coordination among multiple disciplines and external vendor partners.

Communication and Collaboration

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate digital delivery concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

* Well-versed in organizational leadership, effective vision setting, building consensus, and problem-solving across diverse teams.

* Published or recognized in industry forums, with a record of participating in or leading innovative digital delivery and BIM initiatives.

Leadership and Management

* Proven ability to lead and mentor diverse teams spanning multiple geographies and business lines.

* Demonstrated project leadership experience, including budgeting, developing scope and fee, and leading large, multi-disciplinary teams.

* Experience integrating civil and architectural design within a digital environment, showcasing a strong track record of delivering successful transportation programs.



Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • 10 years experience in related field
  • Maintains a professional or Engineering registration and has related technical experience
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse teams
  • Works cooperatively with other business class regional directors, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
