R&D Software Engineer III - (on-site at SSF) Myriad Women's Health is a pioneering genetic testing and precision-medicine company, recently honored as one of Fast Company's top 10 most innovative biotech companies in 2022. Each year, our genetic tests empower nearly 1 million women and their families to make critical and timely healthcare decisions, whether they're thinking about starting a family or evaluating risk for cancer. The heart of our high-throughput genetic laboratory is an automated sequencing platform that integrates advanced software with robotics, databases, distributed bioinformatics pipelines, and data-visualization platforms (see a video of the lab in action here). The R&D team is working on cutting edge research to improve and expand the actionable information in our existing products and to launch new ones. We are looking for a talented software engineer who's excited to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment with other scientists and mechanical engineers. Whether you're a scientist or a mechanical engineer by training who now focuses more on software development, or a software engineer who wants to solve early-stage research problems, this may be the perfect position for you. Join us at Myriad! Key Highlights:
- Bridge Science & Engineering: Work closely with molecular biologists, automation engineers, and data scientists to develop and test new chemistries, instruments, and analytical tools.
- Fast-Paced & Agile: Unlike traditional software teams with rigid planning cycles, this role offers flexibility to rapidly prototype, iterate, and experiment in an R&D environment.
- Hands-On Problem Solving: Instead of owning a software product, you'll be integrating with and extending existing platforms, writing custom scripts, and developing tools that directly impact research progress.
- Diverse Technical Exposure: Work with a variety of technologies-instrument APIs, LIMS, data pipelines, and lab automation systems-without being confined to a single stack.
- Impactful Contribution: Your work will help accelerate scientific discoveries by removing software-related bottlenecks in experimental design and execution.
- This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys problem-solving, interdisciplinary collaboration, and fast-moving projects over long, structured development cycles.
What You'll Do:
- Enabling Experimentation - Develop scripts, tools, and integrations that support the testing of new technologies, ensuring seamless interaction with existing software platforms.
- Rapid Prototyping - Build and refine proof-of-concept software solutions to facilitate early-stage research and development efforts. Instrument & Platform Integration - Work with lab instruments, automation systems, and data analysis pipelines to enhance research workflows.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration - Partner with scientists, automation engineers, and data scientists to understand technical challenges and deliver practical solutions.
- Agility & Adaptability - Operate outside of rigid software development cycles to provide timely support where traditional engineering teams lack bandwidth.
- Knowledge Sharing - Maintain documentation, best practices, and reusable code to ensure continuity and scalability of solutions.
Who You Are:
- We're looking for a candidate with strong CS fundamentals and practical software engineering intuition - to help us scale up genomics to millions of users.
- Exposure to Computer Science and Engineering as a discipline. A BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent disciplines
- 3+ years of industry experience in a high-level language. We work predominantly in Python.
- Industry experience working with web application development a plus. We use Django as a web framework.
- Experince with client-server communications is a plus.
- Experience with embedded systems a plus.
- Experience with Unix, Git, and other command line tools.
Applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder) Salary ranges vary by geographical location. Physical Requirements Lifting Requirements - light work or exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
