The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Library Specialist Part-Time 19 for the Libraries Division. Additional vacancies may be filled from this recruitment for any location/section within the library system. This position may be assigned to any location/section within the Libraries Division based on operational needs.

The purpose of this position is to provide direct public assistance to customers, including identifying the needs of customers, obtaining library materials, supporting Circulation or
Information Team Services, coordinating volunteers and participating in outreach activities, enforcing the customer code of conduct, identifying and reporting equipment concerns, and other duties as required.
This position will be responsible for serving as a shift supervisor and able to perform all circulation duties: including resolving escalating customer account matters; supervising, training, and evaluating staff; prepare work schedules; ensuring policies and procedures are followed properly; accurately collecting library fees and processing bus pass sales through adherence to training and cash handling best practices and resolving cash handling discrepancies; processing voter registrations; ensuring all required reports (narrative or statistical) are submitted in a timely manner; and resolving day today operational concerns/issues related to Circulation functions.
Additionally, this position will be responsible for coordinating with their team on various projects, for example, collection maintenance and programming support; assisting the public with accessing the library's collection; providing computer assistance to the public; delivering technology classes to the public; assisting with programming for all ages, including in a variety of equipment including creative technology. This position serves as a liaison with Library Learning Services, providing intake evaluations for adult literacy students, plans and offers public programs with a literacy focus, for example, English Cafe.
The Library Specialist assigned to the Collection Management Unit provides system-wide support for the Libraries Division as it pertains to acquisitions of library materials and maintenance of the online library catalog. This position processes new materials, performs basic data entry assignments, and processes invoices related to the purchase of library materials. This position also supports the library's digitization project by using a variety of technology to capture and preserve historical records, including scanning images from original documents. This position also assists with reciprocal borrowing and lending of materials to meet customer needs.
This position will also perform related work as assigned and may be assigned to work at any library location based on operational needs.

Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Oversees the work of subordinate library employees, verifying that tasks are completed as assigned; schedules staff and reschedules assignments to cover absences and other branch staffing needs.
Provides first line customer service to library patrons; assists with returning and charging of materials, issues new library cards, gives library services orientation, and handles Point of Sale transactions; provides service to customers with account problems and provides resolutions.
Resolves day to day operating issues; answers any questions or concerns from staff; develops new procedures to address matters that arise.
Completes daily cash handling transactions, including counting or reviewing all funds in the safe and previous day's sales deposits and reports; verifies staff cash drawers and forms after the shift; orders all cash handling supplies; creates daily cash reports; enters data into various reports for accurate accountability.
Reviews all equipment for proper working order and completes minor technical troubleshooting; places service requests for computers, lights, kiosks, insect remediation, and other building related issues.
Provides backup assistance to other supervisors including but not limited to scheduling, volunteers, interlibrary loans, circulation lists, tracer and claims return and timesheets.
Assists in the training of new employees and completes staff performance appraisals.
Maintains collections by correcting catalog errors, adding donations to collections by processing and labeling them, and weeding the collections as needed.
Plans and implements story times, craft programs, book clubs, movie days, and works with teen volunteers who assist with these programs.
Ensures the safety of library customers by reporting behavior violations and contacting appropriate authorities regarding health issues or atypical behaviors; provides documentation of each incident.
Introduces volunteers and new staff members to the use of equipment, policies/procedures, and library functions/work environment to ensure that assignments are properly completed and equipment is used correctly.
Prepares a variety of correspondence, notifications, forms and related documents in order to communicate information to staff and the public; collects daily customer computer use statistics and summarizes on a monthly report; creates a weekly newsletter to communicate with other employees.
