Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati Libraries (UCL) seeks a Web & User Experience Specialist to support and advance UCL's mission by ensuring its website and digital resources are discoverable, accessible, and aligned with the needs of the university community. This position will oversee the content and continuous improvement of the UCL website, ensuring usability, accuracy, and accessibility. The Web & User Experience Specialist will collaborate with library partners to develop and implement strategies that optimize the library's digital services and overall web experience. This role requires strong project management skills and coordination with centralized IT services to ensure alignment with institutionaltechnology policies and infrastructure. A key focus will be on assessing and improving the user experience to better serve the university community and ensuring consistency across the multiple libraries. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of library systems and a commitment to user-focused services.

Essential Functions

* In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Operations and User Services, define and drive UX with significant impact on University Libraries' business.

-Coordinate with library partners to ensure a seamless and consistent user experience for the public facing side of the library management system (LMS.) Serve as the Discovery Administrator in ExLibris Alma/Primo VE.

* Use customer research, agile design iteration, prototyping, and usability testing.

-Conduct usability testing, user research, and analytics assessments to enhance web interfaces and services.

* Translate concepts into user flows, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes that lead to intuitive user experiences.

-Serve as a key advocate for user experience assessment and improvement, ensuring library digital services meet the needs of diverse users.

* Facilitate the envisioned journey by researching, conceiving, sketching, prototyping, and user-testing experiences for digital products.

* Influence technical design and product direction and work with developers in central IT to implement.

* Design and deliver wireframes, user stories, user journeys, and mockups optimized for a wide range of devices and interfaces.

* Take a user-centered design approach and rapidly test and iterate your designs.

* Act as subject matter expert in enterprise content management systems across the university, regardless of platform.

-Stay current with best practices in web design, accessibility (WCAG compliance), and user experience (UX) to implement improvements.

-Coordinate with library partners to ensure a seamless and consistent user experience across Ex Libris Alma/Primo, the library management system (LMS). Serve as the Discovery Administrator.

* Identify design problems and devise elegant solutions for central IT developers to implement.

Essential Function (cont'd)

* Assist in the development of user guides and training documentation for content management systems.

-Create and maintain user guides, tutorials, and conduct workshops to support library team in creating and managing digital content and the use of UCL tools and platforms for content delivery.

* Create and maintain new user training and Apex User credentials for access.

-Act as the designated UC Apex User for the Library

* Perform quality assurance and troubleshoot issues by reading logs, running tests, and communicating with Central IT system administrators.

-Create and manage web content, coordinate projects, ensure that content is up to date, and gather usage statistics and information to continually improve resource discovery and use of UCL's collections.

-Maintain Analytics for library web services.

* Participate in project planning process. May help prepare estimates and operational requirements.

* Assist with user experience design specifications.

-Implement best practices for search engine optimization (SEO) to improve the discoverability of library spaces and services.

-Conduct usability testing, user research, and analytics assessments to enhance web interfaces and services.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or related field.
  • Six (6) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

  • Two (2) years of UX design experience
  • Ability to comprehend the technical aspects of platform capabilities
  • Experience with JavaScript, JCR-SQL Querying, HTML, CSS/LESS
  • Understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Experience in a public library or in an academic setting, preferably in an academic/research library. MLIS is a plus.
  • Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) or similar enterprise Sling-based CMS.
  • Experience with web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics) and user feedback tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Experience with Ex Libris Alma / Primo.
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member to assess and shift priorities and to adapt a demanding and rapidly changing environment and with multiple stakeholders.
