Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for the planning, organization, direction, and evaluation of patient care services (primarily nursing services) within an assigned specialty or sub-specialty area in one of the ambulatory clinics. Persons in this position provide supervision and direction to subordinate nursing personnel, coordinating the nursing service with the medical services in order to provide an efficient and professional environment for optimum production in health care for the patient. Employees are also responsible for providing professional nursing care within the assigned area of work. Supervisory duties include but are not limited to interviewing applicants for vacant nursing positions and making the final selection, maintaining personnel records regarding leave time, evaluations, and personnel problems, conducting employee evaluations, approving and coordinating leave time for nursing personnel, and assisting personnel in setting work-related goals. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Ensures nursing staff are properly trained and supervised to perform job functions.
  • Ensures staff competency to function as assigned.
  • Monitors nursing processes to determine patients' and their families' physical and mental health status, needs, and preferences, based upon interpretation of comprehensive health assessment findings.
  • Analyzes assessment data to identify problems, formulate goals/outcomes, and develop plans of care for patients and their families using evidence-based practice in collaboration with patients, their families, and the interdisciplinary health care team members.
  • Monitors and reports communication of patient data using Electronic Health Records to support decision-making for delivery of optimal patient care.
  • Ensures EMR training is conducted for all nursing employees.
  • Conducts departmental nursing staff meetings.
  • Personally assists with or performs exams and procedures and documents intervention in EMR, and monitors staff to ensure compliance with evidence-based practice.
  • Monitors and ensures telephonic communication between clinic staff and patients comply with departmental and organizational policy. Priority is given to patient triage. Ensures staff are properly trained and are implementing departmental protocols.
  • Inspects examination/treatment rooms to ensure they are properly stocked and compliant with Infection Prevention and Control policies.
  • Ensures and monitors the preparation and operation of equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, and/or procedures. Proactively communicates with the Clinic Manager/Administrator regarding equipment needs and issues.
  • Ensures staff evaluates and reports patient outcomes and responses to therapeutic interventions. Ensures staff complete proper follow-up on patient care issues/messaging.
  • Performs investigation of accidents/injuries and generates occurrence reports for unexpected outcomes.
  • Works with faculty physicians to develop, implement, and evaluate patient and family teaching plans to address health promotion, maintenance, and restoration.
  • Conducts departmental emergency response drills and ensures staff participation in organizational emergency preparedness drills.
  • Ensures and monitors proper disinfection and sterilization of medical equipment and instrumentation.


Required Qualifications
+ Education:+ Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program. + License/Certification:+ Current RN license in the State of Texas or ability to obtain a Texas license. + Experience:+ At least four years in nursing, with at least two of those years in a supervisory capacity.
